Spoon - no, unfortunately my clip is black plastic, not metal. Sounds like I have the poor man's version of what Mitchell made.

Much better than the "scum ball" style octo holders that you cram the mouthpiece into only to find it dangling behind you two minutes into the dive.

That's a good idea. I might have to stick a few in my gear bag for that; I sure as heck don't use them....

I have to disagree. With the scumball in the link on page 1, I made about 110 dives using this and not once did my octo come out. That style is quite secure; I however don't know about the round kind.

Whether the "scumballs" work depends on the size/shape of both the holder and your mouthpiece. I never had much luck with them.

A bit like a commercialised snorkel-keeper perhaps? :06:

Charlie99:
If you use the higher D-ring, then you don't have to remove the octo in order to reach over and test breathe it. It's not technically in the triangle zone recommended by PADI, but when horizontal in the water it's more visible.

I agree with the higher D-ring in theory but in practice find that it's useful for loads of other things such as a torch or attaching an SMD on a drift dive. Besides I'd normally detach my octo anyway to show a buddy unfamiliar with it the correct orientation etc. How about stretching it across the chest to the mirror of the D-ring I showed earlier?

That would be fine too, but you'll have to undo it when getting out of your gear. Every time. I did that with mine for a while using a clip so I could just unsnap the scumball, but that gets tiring. I'd rather leave it in except when testing it at the start of the dive.

I think what he meant was it's basically half a snorkel keeper with a clip on the other end.

Yeah maybe wasn't specific enough... just was saying it was like paying a large expense for what the snorkel keeper [apparently] does.

I think that would be a bad idea. It looks like all of those either have to be unclipped or are on a 'stretch coil'. You don't want your octo trying to 'un-stretch' out of your buddy's mouth.
