This may seem like a stupid question. I just bought a Mares Rebel Octo and it came with a rubber plug in the mouthpiece. I assume that this plug is intended to be secured to my BC with a clip or some other holder. If the Octo is needed you just pull and the octo can be used while the plug dangles from the BC. Am I correct? I didn't want to assume anything.

Without seeing them, I'd guess you've probably got the right idea. I have some Dacor octos that came with plugs like that and I assume the same. I don't use them for that though, as I think they're much too hard to get the octo off of.

If you wanted to be mean, you could leave the plug in and secure the octo some other way. Your buddy runs OOA and grabs your octo then inhales a plug. He'll probably swallow it on accident, and then he not only suffers the embarrassment of everyone knowing he wasn't watching his air when he surfaces on your octo, but he will either have to have his stomach pumped upon return or he'll be having a good time in the bathroom a few days later. :)

A plug like that can keep alot of crap out of your alternate second stage.

Your promary in in your mouth so not much gets in there. The alternate which is usually open in subject to all of the silt, particulate and floating debris you encounter. Some real crud can circulate into the cavity. Just make sure it breaks away cleanly for when you are testing it during your dives and should you ever need to deploy it during an incident.

My Mares Brigade came with one, and I did not like it at all! That thing is a deathtrap. I think you'd rip the mouthpiece off before the octo came detached from the plug!! I took it off. Let the octo drag in the sand and crud, it shouldn't be an issue if you clean it out after a day of diving.

You have it correct. Typically called an Octo keeper. When dry they can be hard to removed and insert but once wet it is much easier. I have a couple of these from Mares and they are much better than some I have seen.

As some others have mentioned, using an octo keeper is good idea as it keeps the octo from getting crap in it, dragging on the reef, easily locatable in case of need, etc.

I have one on my abyss octo but find that on occasion when my octo freeflows it makes it that bit harder to get it to stop.

Please get an Octo holder of some sort...!

I have a Mares octo that came with one like that except that it is yellow. I have the plug tied to my bc. If you pull on the octo, the plug pops off and you have the octo free.

I find that it actually keeps stuff out of the octo, and keeps it from free flowing.

Just my opinion, but I really like it.
