Update...
I have not had time to get into it totally, but the Atom has an updated version of the Ocean Log software. At a brief glance, it looks tons better than the VT version. It also looks like it might accept tank information for a prper computation of SAC, though I am not sure yet. I'll keep everyone updated...

One small niggling point at present. The VT PRo version saves it backup history in Microsoft Access format. WHen I tried to import that into ATOM, I see that atom only imports some special format database file. So far, there does not seem to be an easy way to do this, but I'll have another look later...

Is it just me, or is anyone else disappointed with the quality of this software? Yes, it's free but where they get you in the wallet is for the $100-$120 special data cable to connect it to your PC.

Does anyone know of any other software out there that is better and I can still use the cable to download to my PC?

Maybe another program that I at least can import the data file from oceanLog?

It is a pretty sad showing for software. Anyone have any ideas?

Yep. It's pretty lame. I only use it once in a while to look at the profile of a specific dive.

Even to do something as common as figure out average depth in order to calculate SAC, I have to "print to file", import the data into Excel and manipulate it there.

yeah, i could do that. It's just that the software should do it for me. Do you use anything else other than excel?

Check out Scubase http://www.scubase.net

The cost is $49.95

It reads the Oceanlog file (.MDB) and from there you can design your own forms, reports, ...

It took me a few hours to get into the "mindset" of Alex (the program author) but once I did, I have been very happy.

There is a demo version that you can download and play with the customization features. It allows you to import 10 dives, so you can see how it would work with Oceanlog.

I added fields so that it imported the start, min, and max of both the Tissue loading bar graph and the 02 bar graph. It does not support importing those values for every sample point in the dive profile, but to me that is not a major issue since start, end, and max are the important things.

It supports many different computers, so if you change comuters you can probably continue to use it in conjunction with the computer specific SW.

Alex is very responsive to email questions, and helped me out when I could not find a particular feature.

I can also send you my Oceanlog specific customization if you need it. I will be out of the country from Sunday until March 2, but PM me before then if you want help.

There are other issues too.... I have emailed Oceanic TWICE with NO response, & called a couple times, only to have me leave a message (ya, right). First, when data gets imported off the the DC to the PC, the year of the dive is exactly a year older than the date on the DC screen, so you have to manually change EACH dive after the download, second, if you have more than 4 or 5 dives to import (say, after coming home from a week long resort/liveaboard trip), the download errors out. Another guy posted the same problems a last year.

I don't have that problem with my VersaPro. Do you have the latest sw? You can download it at

Hope it helps!

Does Scubase allow you to compute your average depth and/or export the data in a manipulatable (not sure that's a word) way to Excel?

My biggest gripe by far with OceanLog is having to manually type in my depths to calculate my SAC rate.

The program itself calculates average depth and SAC. You can disable the automatic calculation of SAC if you want and enter it yourself.

Download the trial version and play with it - I rarely recommend things, since everyone is different and to recommend SW is to invite flames, but I think Alex did a good job for $50 SW. After you play with it, if you have any questions, email Alex at

akh@cyber_strategy.org

and he can answer any questions.

Disclaimer - I have no relationship to Alex. I just appreciate a job reasonably well done.

Will Scubase allow me to hook up my DC to the computer and download it directly to the software? Or will I have to download it with Oceanlog then import it to Scubase?

Thanks
