I believe if you have the "dynamic adjustment valve" or whatever it is called set very high, the difference when on your back could seem more extreme, perhaps even restricting flow to the point where it feels like you cannot breathe. I tend to have mine set to provide very little resistance, but even then can feel some restriction when upside down. Perhaps you need to have your second stage adjusted a bit.
 
When I took my Delta4 reg out for the first dives, I encountered roughly the same " problem ". It stopped delivering air when I was upside down ... ( I really like to look into crevasses and tight places !!! )

I took it back to my LDS and they re-adjusted it NO CHARGE . Never happened again .
