What about shore diving? On the thread about "Local Secrets" that's stickied, I found a lot of shore dive locations in the Ft Lauderdale area. I think this might be an excellent option for us as we'd only have to pay for parking and equipment (we'll be on a tight budget) and a lot of the reefs are shallow and near the shore.

As brian already mentioned, there is soem nice shore diving in the Ft. Lauderdale area, especially Dania and Lauderdale by the Sea. As your plans firm up, just post them under the Trips thread, and I'm sure that you'll have plenty of folks who will join you! :D

Check out Blue Heron Bridge in West palm if you can plan around the tides. I did my check out dive there and it is really nice most of the time. there are 2 dive sites there with lots of fish and some sunken boats. The only catch is you have to get in right before high slack tide. There is not much current and it is pretty clear. If you miss the tide, it will not be clear and there will be a strong current.

check out this site if you are interested: Blue Heron Bridge

Good luck, have fun.
