Took this pic of a fish under a rock alcove while diving Oahu last August. I cannot seem to i.d. it by the tail alone. Anyone got a clue??!!?? Thanks!

I think it is some kind of wrasse. Size would be about right and there are a couple species that have that tail coloration. The red margined wrasse the red tail with a light green band above which could easily look white depending upon your white balance. Yes I know the red margined has a more red body but individual colors vary widely among individuals (just to keep us off balance I'm sure). Still the color pattern near the tail, and tail shape looks like a wrasse to me. Glad you didn't poke it with a stick to make it come out for the photo :D. Good job.
 
the appearance and behavior is consistent with the pinktail trigger.
