Is an off the shelf apeks DS4/ATX50 (non-green) ready for O2 deco? I know they are 40% ready but is it a must to have a new ones O2 cleaned?

Once it's done can you interchange regs for 100% and 50% stage bottles?

There is no "DIR" answer to this. Just like the rest of the diving population has varying opinions on how anal one must be, there is variation among DIR people.

It is "40% compatible" out of the box...they (Apeks) will not call it O2 compatible unless you buy the specific O2 (green) model. However, it is assembled with O2 compatible (again they will never say "O2 safe") parts and lubricant. Your choice as to whether to use it for O2 (or 50%) service or not.

Aqualung wants ~400 a reg to "O2 clean" a non-O2 (non-green) reg.

what??? Are you saying that if I take my black ds4/tx50, send in to the factory to have it O2 cleaned, they want to charge about $400??? Awhile ago I was looking in their catalog and confused that they sell standard regs and o2 regs and yet they only have 1 rebuild kit. A call later I was told that the parts are the same, and you just have to clean all the parts...

I do not make that up. I bought two regs from my shop and left them there to be O2 cleaned. The Aqualung guy quoted the shop something reasonable ($75 a reg) to clean the regs...but they'd have to have the regs for an "official quote." My shop sent in the regs...took the regs apart without authorization and did "$200 of work" on each reg before the shop called them saying "Hey you never sent the full quote" ... "Oh, $400 a reg, and we already got started..."

Shop called me, I told the shop no, shop told AL no, and AL still charged the shop nearly $200 per reg for "service." My shop, being awesome, and knowing I didn't authorize the work, ate the cost.

I was there for some of the phone calls, and I saw the AL receipts...so it's not just hearsay.

YMMV.

I trust you are telling the truth, but man that just doesn't make any sense! Just out of curiosity, what shop do you use where they would send the regs back to the mfg for servicing? I would love to have seen a break down of services performed to warrant a $200 bill

Aqualung and Apeks make regulators prepared for oxygen in thier "clean room". These regulators are the Calypso O2 and the Apeks XTX40/DS4. Each will come sealed in a plastic bag and certified oxygen clean when purchased.

Remember that Aqualung sells to the military and they have strict oxygen service rules. As such they have invested in the specific tools and methods for a documented oxygen service.

The XTX50 is not an oxygen service reg out of the box but a qualified technican can clean one for you and it will be fine. However if you do send it to Aqualungs facility for cleaning it will come with a $200 price tag. This is no different than sending any part to a lab for oxygen cleaning.

IF you are in need of a regulator just for oxygen the Calypso O2 is an outstanding product for this. We use them on all our oxygen cylinders and on nothing else. And they are reasonably priced in the $300 or so range. The XTX40/ds4 O2 is in the $600 range.

Cheers

How does one dive them if they are in a sealed bag :rofl3:

Exactly. And what happens to them once they are removed from the bags? There's your answer right there.

They are also dealing with the military, who gladly pay eleventy billion dollars for a hammer that we can pick up in Home Depot for $25. The military lives to spend money needlessly.

On the subject of "clean rooms" and "O2 cleaning"; I went to my local welding supply shop last week to get some CGA fittings because I'm expanding my air cascade system. The parts guy didnt' do CGA fittings so he sent me to the back where the service guy was. The service guy is the one that fixes and rebulids regulators for welding, including those used on the O2 cylinders. I can safely state that the room they use for rebuilding and repairing O2 regulators for the welding industry is no cleaner than the average 2 car garage. And the accident rate for O2 in the welding industry??? Somewhere between never and non-existant.
