I'm in the process of doing trimix training and looking into buying (2) O2 cleaned regs instead of getting hit with the rental fee each time. My main regs are Apeks TX-100 and ATX-50 but would like something alot less costly with DIN 300.

Any suggestions? Best to buy from factory O2 cleaned or have a regular reg cleaned (although that added cost probably equals getting it from the factory cleaned)?

Thanks,

Kev

I don't know what kind of diving your going to do but I spend as much or more time on my decompression regs than I do on my bottom mix/regs so I don't use cheap stuff. Also a malfunction of a deco reg can be a real inconvenience.

I'm not aware of a reg that comes with the recommenfdation that it be used with 100%. I would just get a good reg and clean it.

or just get a good reg and use it. I use TX40/DS4s for my deco regs. Neither has had anything specific done to it.

Don't you wipe yours off on your pants before mounting it on your O2 bottle?::confused:

So do I need any specific brand of technical diving pants prior to wiping the reg or could it cause spontaneous combustion if I use a shorty from LP?

Right now I'm just wall diving in the Cayman's (wrecks later) but your right, spent over an hour an half in deco on my last dive... Not looking at getting junk just trying not to privately subsidize Apeks this month. Was thinking of the ATX40/DS4 combo or something used. Figure mostly using EAN 80 and some other lesser mix. Just didn't think needed the quality of an ATX40 at 30 feet. Worst case if it fails, which doubt would if serviced, could always swap it with the reg on the other deco bottle, or grow an extra arm and steal it off the doubles (talking worst case here, although getting water in the first stage isn't too cool...).

I would think the regs come pretty clean from the manufacturer and noticed on the other posts WreckWriter just uses a regular Apeks reg. Would be my luck to have it flash while in training. Other question is does anyone check out your regs when you rent deco tanks to make sure they are O2 clean. Was thinking of possibly cleaning myself.

Thanks,

Kev

One other question... I have a bright yellow TX40 Octopus that is still stuck on my old TX100 yoke first stage... bought an ATX50 as secondary backup for doubles. Could use the TX40 but I find it very uncomfortable. Hate the mouthpiece. TX100 and ATX50 I can breath for hours but TX40 doesn't bite right and feels front heavy. Do you happen to know if the TX100 mouth piece fits on the TX40? I was keeping the yoke/TX40 for recreational diving... now if my wife will let me steal her TX40 :D I'll be all set except for (2) DS4's and some feedback on cleaning :)

well, obviously it would be improper of me to recommend you don't follow industry established parameters for O2 cleaning. All I can tell you is that everyone I know uses Apeks or Scubapro regs right out of the box. I haven't seen one burst into flames yet :)

I would skip titanium but since you're concerned about cost that's likely not going to be an issue :)

Using the reg without cleaning it is a bad idea. I've found metal shavings in several regs when I took them apart after gettting them "brand new". Also, they are often not adjusted properly.

O2 cleaning has it proponents and then there are the people who don't find it necessary. I think there is no reason to be paranoid, but there is also no reason not to have your reg O2 clean.

However, before diving a reg it should definitely be cleaned once, adjusted and tested.

Just my opinion of course....

Ask Heather to show you her Scubapro reg one day..........

Then get her to show you her left palm.
