Oy folks, I've been reading the discussions here with, shall we say, considerable interest. The whole backplate/wing subject has really caught my eye, seems like something I might want to try.

My current BCD is an older Dacor Nautica that did service in pool training (and it's got the faded brown color to prove it) which is quite comfortable and works well, but I do have a hankering to have something different around. I already told you about the old plastic backpack I have...and many of the BCs out there are enticing (although I probably wouldn't get anything too fancy). But now there's this new option. My impression, to the extent that I was even aware of them, was that bp/w rigs were more tech-diver oriented and too much for me to handle, not to mention expensive. That may not be true. The put-it-together aspect of it agrees with my sensibilities as well.

But I am totally new to this particular area of BCD discourse. Any other threads here that discuss the basics, advantages of wings over jacket BCDs, who the manufacturers are, or just FAQs?

Incidentally, the most difficult diving I plan on doing anytime soon is maybe Great Lakes stuff, or at most some of the more frigid quarries around here. Basically I'm straight inland recreational diving, with the occasional detour through the Bahamas as my meager salary allows. Heck, I may take my old backpack with me on my Blackbeard's cruise, if they let me.

cheers

You'll find hundreds of posts here dealing with bp&w. Do a search on "backplate" and/or "wing" and you'll turn up quite a few.

There is nothing "tech" about a basic bp&w, and they work very well for both novice divers and recreational diving. FredT, Oxycheq and Halcyon are some suppliers of equipment that you may want to check out for styles, sizes and prices.

And yes, a bp&w can be very cost effective compared to many of the common BCs available.
