Like I posted, neither. BPM didn't pay or didn't allow cartel drugs to be sold in their venues. I remember back in my all night party days full patch Hells Angels started showing up in the clubs here in TO. No mystery why they were there.

Sounds more like the 'Old school Zetas' are attempting to put the area into play. I am inclined to think that the venue had paid one the existing cartels ( 'Golfos, Pelones and Chapulines' cartels) extortion and, as required, did not interfear with their party favor sales. The 'Old School Zetas' appear to have picked a high visibility target to plant their flag and contest control of not only this type of event but the more lucrative day to day income streams from the other businesses in the 'plaza'. On the bright side at least they didn't torch the place with everyone in it like what happened a few years back in a Monterey casino.

Zetas were expressing their dissatisfaction with their cut from the BPM proceeds. It's now a moot point as this was the last year that it will be held in Playa. The two destinations under consideration at this time are Brazil and Portugal.

I have never, ever been offered drugs in Cozumel, for sale or otherwise. I must not look the part. But then, I don't go out much at night and am NEVER in a nightclub.

You may not look like a likely purchaser, or you might not even be aware what you've been offered if you have been propositioned in the past, the typical offer is super quiet almost inaudible, I'm so used to ignoring come-ons and they say it so quietly that it usually doesn't register what they said for a few steps. It's usually something like "tour for tomorrow..." followed by the voice going whisper quiet.."weed... coca?" If you're not listening to them you likely wouldn't even hear the offer of drugs.

I have only been offered drugs once on Cozumel, but I was wearing a tie dyed Grateful Dead Tshirt at the time; that might've had something to do with it.

A few years ago one of our group wanted to go to the store to stock up on soft drinks, so he flagged a cab and asked the cabbie to take him to get some Cokes. When the cab steered off Melgar into dark back streets our guy realized that there had been a miscommunication.

My wife & I got a couple of offers last month, within a block of Casa Mexicana. Quiet, low-key, and one was a very amusing pitch. Less of a hassle than the folks selling roses or bracelets. Easy to overlook. Didn't seem that different that similar interaction in tourist areas in many countries (US included). Not a big deal for us.

I did get a proposition to trade my wife in for one guys two sisters....with no photos of the pair, of course I had to decline. Oh..and because my wife was prepared to emasculate me immediately on the spot should I take the deal!

As far as not looking like a possible user, that is highly likely. But as far as not recognizing the offer, no. I have some family members involved at various levels in the drug life, including a long time heroin addict daughter, and all the exposure to that subculture including the education that comes with it. So maybe its my goody old fart looks that is doing it?!
