Interesting perspectives, as it's my wife who was a diver first, before we met (took diving for phys ed credit at Texas A&M!), then got me started about 2 years after we were married. In my case, it helped that she'd planned vacations to tropical destinations with very clear water. I did a "resort course" in Cabo San Lucas for one two tank dive morning, then next year she took us to Sandal's Negril, Jamaica - and that set the hook in me to go ahead and get certified while we were there. My suggestion, Brit Medic, is to try a similar approach if you haven't already done so - go together to a sunny, tropical, clear water destination - the idea of an "all-inclusive" to try out before comitting to certification helped me make my choice.

Thanks for the advice mate, just booked a week all inclusive in the Red sea at Christmas. Funny enough there is a dive centre at the hotel, which obviously I didn't know about!

It's nice when your SO wants you to partake in things he enjoys, a gentle nudge is nice, a push is NOT. Be willing to compromise and be patient. What other sports does she like? Kayaking? That MIGHT be cheaper than shopping.

If she has been snorkeling and did not like it, then don't bother with the scuba. If she hasn't been snorkeling, then take her. You in Ireland? Would your local LDS rent drysuits for snorkeling? Being comfortalbe is key. Or the warmth of the Red Sea, that would be ideal!

Good luck.

I'm in the same boat as H2Andy, almost exactly to the word except that the snorkeling thing just started this year, she was afraid of what's in the water too.

I now know what a manta feels like with a remora attached to it!

(and i do mean really a great looking ... tall, shapely and almost no swimsuit ). .....we had gone down several times together while on the boat .............

Several times eh?

Sounds like the...ah.....diving was great! ;)

Dump her and get one that dives..........

My wife expressed the same reasons/concerns. Exposure worked on my wife. My two sons and I tried with no success to get my wife to dive. "Not going to do it, period". However she has been more than willing to travel with us and support us during all of our dives and dive schools. After months of hearing all the dive stories and being around my fellow divers and seeing how much fun they were having, SHE decided to become certified and is now so hooked she is promoting diving to all of her friends. Be patient and exposure her to the sport as much as possible.

Hello, I am new to Scubaboard so if this thread has been done before, I apologise.

My girlfriend doesn't dive but I do, so it means I go on diving holidays without her. I would love for her to learn to dive so we could dive together, but there is one problem.........she is afraid of the water. She is not afraid of drowing etc but what is in the sea! I have little hope I hear you say, I won't ever pressurise her into trying ,the desire must come from her. Has anybody got any advice for me or can relate to this issue with a non diving partner.

Try a cruise.

You get to dive in a lot of cool places, and she gets to do other stuff (shore excursions - horse-back riding, tubing, shopping, all sorts of stuff) with friiends.

It's a compromise, since you ton't get to spend a week in one place doing tons of dives, and she doesn't get to hang out with you for part of the day, but it seems to work pretty well.

Terry

PS. Dive Nitrox, so you're not tired when you get back. You don't get points for abandonding your wife all day, then coming back and crashing on the bed. 8-)

my wife doesn't dive either, but we still vacation together. she understands that
mornings are my dive time, .

I do the same thing. Of course it is easy to do since my wife's idea of a vacation is to do very little in a beautiful place. My idea is to do as much as possible in a beautiful place. So.....my wife sleeps until around 10:00 then leisurely gets going...I'm back from diving around 1:00 and we go do lunch and the rest of the day together. I'm still hoping to get her to dive but until then this works.
