You're not going to see me go into those points right now, because Bob, Doug and a few others are already on the defensive and dissmissive side as a result of nereas approaching this with as poor an approach as can be found.

What else is new? He does this all the time (of course so do others)...it's a shame as it undermines open dialoge and an exchange of ideas.

Sure, the signal to noise ratio is often increased to the point of not making it worth discussing when Nereas becomes involved. I generally quietly slink out of the conversation at that point. No sense wasting time.

Fweber, I'm happy to have constructive dialog. But poo-slinging just isn't worth it.

It's a quotation from Socrates:

"... to let no day pass without discussing goodness and all the other subjects about which you hear me talking and examining both myself and others," he felt that this activity, "is really the very best thing that a man (or women) can do, and that life without this sort of examination is not worth living ..."

What the hell, let's drive this train a little further into the ground ...

A simple exercise for ya ... or anyone else who cares to try it ...

Take your V-planner and run a profile for a dive. Set the conservatism level to +2.

Now apply the rules of ratio deco to the same dive profile ... assuming, of course, that you have a clue what those rules actually are.

Note the similarities. What you'll find in most cases is that the major difference is that ratio deco will have you making 1-minute stops starting from a deeper depth than V-planner ... but the total run time will be very similar. Personally, I prefer the deep stops. If I have to explain to you why, then perhaps you don't know enough about basic decompression to be doing those kind of dives.

There's a saying ... "those who say it can't be done should get out of the way of those who are doing it".

Oh ... and as to your assertion that standard mixes are "unsafe" ... I suggest you take that one up with NOAA ... either that or go back to your basic Nitrox class and pay attention this time.

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

The problem with +2 applied universally to every diver is that many divers simply need a more conservative setting, such as +3 or +4 etc.

You have touched precisely upon one of the many major flaws of GUE-DIR: the lobotomic application of "standardized" procedures without the allowance for individual applications of judgment, thought, and freedom by any of the herd of sheep. The top leadership of GUE-DIR may be allowed to do the thinking for them and promulgate newfangled "standardized" protocols, but the sheep must follow obediently, even when it leads them to the chamber.

And yo momma! Can't we just cut to the chase, on this?

Honestly, the threads I enjoy reading the most are the ones where some aspect of the DIR approach is being debated -- as long as the debate stays on topic, and doesn't degenerate into a food fight. There have been several long threads on DIR Explorers like this. I think the most recent one was about why DIR doesn't do "right rich, left lean". I learned a ton from reading it.

Just as the unexamined life isn't worth living, the unexamined idea isn't worth adopting. The problem is that the discussions just can't seem to remain focused on the ideas, and civil.

That's why they call it S&M!:D

There are some however who obviously cannot take the heat, and therefore who should not be in the kitchen. Because clearly they do not enjoy it. So I am glad there is a safe haven, a DIR-only refuge, where they can go, and cheerlead each other, away from the scrutiny, cross-examination, and the heat of the bright light of day.

I like your new banner, ScubaDream, of "instructor." I'm glad you changed it from "DIR compliant" since diving to 100 fsw for 20 mins on EAN25 is not exactly DIR compliant. Good man.

How is your student doing? The one whom you took to the chamber? Just wondering.

Aloha bruddah!

WHat a edited by Mania.....you the one who could not even run vplanner correctly, and then talk out your edited by Mania about something you no nothing about.

TO ALL: SORRY, edited by Mania in my book.....

Honestly, I have to wonder at the tolerance of the mods here, that you don't eventually find yourself banned.

John

Yo and momma have never been considered bad words. If you will scroll upwards and take a look at the gist in the earlier appearance of this phraseology [page 4], you would understand the symbolism and irony then. It is a literary device.
