Hey you guys,
I'm new to diving and just bought a full set of gear for some school related diving. I just got it this past weekend and am planning on going out this upcoming weekend for a test with all of this great new gear. However, I was checking everything the other day and looked at the first stage of my reg (Aqualung Titan LX). I don't know if I'm just not familiar with this type of regulator, but my first stage lacks any sort of discernible opening for the air to enter. I included a picture of the internal portion of the yoke valve for you to check out. From certification and a couple of dives with different gear, I know that not all valves look like this on the inside, as they typically have holes or whatnot. If anyone could enlighten me as to whether or not this is normal, that'd be fantastic and I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks a ton in advance for any help!

You are kidding. Right?

You are looking at the sintered metal filter in the inlet.

My guess would be, you only saw the conical shaped filter.
This is just a flat one.

Here's a video about filters,at the end you'll see some different shapes.

It looks solid, but it isn't. That's a filter that keeps some things out of your first stage that could damage it.

Unfortunately it can't keep out water and if you pick up a significant amount of crud, it will plug up.

In any case, that's where the air enters your regulator.

It's more useful as an indicator of gross tank contamination than anything else. Look at it when it's new and remember what it looks like. If it looks a lot different at a later date, it probably needs service (along with your tanks) and you probably need a better place to get air fills.

Some Aqualung regulators have something called ACD (auto-closure device or something like that). Basically, the input orifice is closed when the system is not pressurized, so water cannot leak in if you forgot to put the dust cap - even if you submerge the regulator.
