You might not hear the hiss. This scares the schiess out of me. Put soapy, soapy water around the joint you're loosening. Look for bubbles as you're loosening the joint and stop at the very first sign of them. Don't be afraid to reapply the soapy, soapy water as needed.

The question, IMO, is do you want to be as safe as possible, or do you wanna keep the setup intact? The safest way I can think to remove this would be to submerge it in a large tank of water, then from a distance (using either a long pole or maybe a heavy weight released by some mechanism) break the SPG. The water should contain the pressure release in the event it's more energetic than expected.

If you want the thing intact... I vote for the towel-wrench plan.

Breaking the spg glass? Will that release the pressure?

I always thought it might, but I had the glass fall out of a button gauge recently and it continued to function as normal. Even if it did work, high pressure and glass shards doesn't sound great.

I see the OP is in the US, you could shoot it off :p

This is beginning to sound like a scene from a multi-universe filled with frustrated MacGyvers!

@pisauron Not the glass, just snap the whole thing off. I'm not thrilled about the idea either, but seriously, best I idea I got it to put it in the biggest tank of water you can find, k-valve off, and then break the connections between the SPG and the tank. Dive shops used to fill tanks in huge vats of water in part to contain the shrapel if....something like this happened, so it should be safe. For good measure, I recommend setting it off remotely.

Exactly. I lost mine underwater once and to my surprise nothing changed 🤪

Also, shooting it off seems like a good idea. Find one of those sniper types that could hit it from a mile away and have him do it
