the only time you would run into a problem is in europe where you would need an m26 connection which is just bigger than a DIN. but that is there local rule.

Before calling the shop liars, it may be that they have not kept up with the times. Of course, one would have to go back at least ten or more years when the industry practice was to replace all of the o-rings with nitrox compatible ones. In which case is the shop is ignorant (and may be reason enough to look for another shop).

However, as stated reg now come that way and the practice is that out of the box regs are good for up to 40% nitrox. After that special handling, full O2 compatibility is required.

PS - I would second the suggestion to mention your experience to the mfg. I have had similar chats.

Silly, you can honestly post the idea that a shop-monkey doesn't know that a brand new reg is nitrox ready? Anyone who has worked at the shop since regs WERENT nitrox ready, has been there long enough to know that times changed (a LONG time ago). Anyone who has been hired in the last decade would only know about nitrox ready regs.

...I'm with Silly on this one....sort of. Perhaps it was just a greedy shop employee trying to make a few more bucks off our friend. I would ask the manager/owner about it and proceed from there, then post the results including the shop name here on SB.

Give the manager a chance to sort him out.

Only the cylinder valve that you will be using needs to be oxygen cleaned and oxygen compatable. This is because a lot of dive shops use teh partial pressure method of mixing nitrox in which 100% oxygen is first shot into the cylinder.

After the mix is done your regulator will not be exposed to any thing over the maximum percentage of oxygen that you are certified to.

While the part about o2 cleaning above in bold is correct for Partial Pressure EAN mixing, I just wanted to add that it's not required for any mix below 40% that is "banked" or blended with an o2 stick or membrane system compressor.

lots of shops "bank" 32% or 36% for example as the most popular blends. It's faster for doing "bulk filling" in locations that do a lot more fills.

o2 cleaning is only required for "partial pressure blending" and for using mixes above 40% o2 content.

I am slightly, just slightly trying to give a benefit of doubt. Not much mind you. But given the state of the scuba industry when it comes to cylinders who the hell knows what some shops are still saying about regs.

Although, I would give the benefit of the doubt it would be best to question the shop further.

Do you need an upgrade if you're using up to 40% nitrox and ask about the tanks too.

If they insist on the upgrade even though u are only using 40%, it's time to go elsewhere.

like don't piss down my neck and tell me it's rainin

I am planning on talking to the shop owner (same person that tried to sell me the upgrade) when I get back from my vacation.

I will post the shop and the result after I talk to them.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate, this is a great board!

While I think that the reg is fine with mixes up to 40%.... it appears here that the LDS is just pouting the manufacturer's reccomendation.

It appears to me that Sherwood is "behind the times" with their product line if they can't sell a regulator that is "nitrox ready" out of the box.

see this.

Sherwood Scuba states as a matter of policy that our regulators "out of the box" are not Nitrox cleaned. In order to dive with Nitrox up to 40% it is reccomended that you have the regulator Nitrox cleaned and that you use the Nitrox parts kit.

If you choose to do otherwise that is your decision.

Good diving,
