I'm wondering how much classroom time is involved with Nitrox training (Enriched Air).

The reason I ask is that I have an option to add Nitrox to my AOW form $95.

I'm in no rush, and will be heading to FL in the sping. I can do it there for about $150, but don't really want to spend much of my vacation time doing classroom and tests. Also, how many dives are involved, the website of the LDS does not say.

If I remember rightly its about 4-6 hours. Had a friend do it, so I may be wrong, haven't done it myself. It's on my 'to do' list!

Good luck with it!

Just did my nitrox classroom work and test. It's usually one class but the studying and test are a b$$ch! It not something you want to do on vacation, I think, especailly since you are doing AOW. I did my AOW in OCT and could have done the nitrox then too but did not want to be doing tables and figuring ppo's while I could be relaxing. $95 is an ok price though. If you want to get it behind you ,then do it all at once but you will have to do a lot of reading. AOW is just diving, after you finish reading the book and reviews. Good luck

Oh, it's two dives. I will do those two dives in Coz next month.

Depends, if we are to assume PADI, you get two dives in which you will go through the motions of analysing the gas and planning with it, other agencies dont have the dive requirement - but really that is all you learn from that dive regarding nitrox. It is 90% class room/book learning, that is where you will go through the major info - no extra skills, just safety precautions and a hands on with analysing. Most LDS's just include the nitrox dives in with the AOW or such course (i think you can now use nitrox in the 4th checkout dive as well) as there is nothing extra "during" the dive to do. Most would include the cost of the nitrox fill in the cost, which would be ok for your deep dive of AOW and maybe another dive that is deeper than 70ft or so as well. The price sounds normal though, anywhere from 100-150 is usual, the lower end for instruction only, the upper end when two tanks of nitrox are included it seems. Oh and assuming you can do the tables from OW and simple math from elementary school, the actual proceedures are a doddle to get through. It does take a few hours to go through various items though, do practice runs, discuss the hazards, etc.

The sooner you get the cert, the better. As a discounted add-on to AOW you really come out a winner. Classroom time will vary with instructor, your level of understanding, and how thorough your pre-class study was.

If PADI, 2 dives are required, but they can be training dives such as AOW, which is partly why you are offered the discount for the combo.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on not wasting vacation time on a class that you can have completed before you go!

Have fun diving,

COZ is my Number 1 dive destination. Unfortunately with a wife and kid, we got SOOO much more bang for the buck in FL where we also have family....

My AOW is *pending* getting scheduled, but should be sometime in Feb, and NOT on vacation. As for the the classroom work, I'd be 100% ready before going on vacation.

But you are sying that it's a day in the classroom... If that's the case, I may just do it with my AOW, and get it done.

Oh, I misunderstood, I thought you were going to do the classroom work there as well. By all means do the stuff before you go down to your vacation. It's only two dives, no brainers. The classroom work is only about 3 to 4 hours, review. The b$$tch is the tables and reading. If you can do all that here, then do it and take your two nitrox dives as part of your AOW.

I also say now. Vacation is for relaxing! I hate math and the nitrox course is the only one I have had to do real math in thus far. PADI, btw. Plus, you can piggy back the nitrox dives with your aow dives and save some money that way. I did dry suit and nitrox at the same time and cut down on the number of dives I would have had to do if I did the courses at a different times. Good luck and an early congrats! I really enjoyed my AOW class and dives.
