Wow, I can understand trying to get the history of the phrase correct. Let's give credit where credit is due, but in reality, when the wetsuit hits the water, what difference does the MOD make anyhow? We all pick some magical number that will keep us safe (we hope) so that we will return to the world of air and light. Writing a number on the side of the tank doesn't change the contents of the tank? If you feel comfortable diving to 1.6 go for it! Same goes for 1.4 or 1.2. If you buddy hands you a tank that has a MOD sticker that is calculated based on a 2.0 PPO2, does it matter as long as you know what mix is in the tank? Which would you believe, the MOD sticker or the analyzer?

do it easy:

Oooo oooo, I know I know, pick me. Lets see if I get this right. I would reanalyze the tank and write my own Mod on it? Did I get it right?

Seriously though, diving with Nitrox is potentially dangerous and as long as the diver knows the limit then all is good, you're not taking sudafed are you? My padi class used 1.4 and 1.6, 1.4 being the MOD, my Genesis React Pro uses 1.6 as it's MOD. It's interesting how it differs. For those on the fence take the class, it's interesting. I'm thinking my next one might be dsat.

PerroneFord:
Both work great. And I agree with Jonnythan, take the class. I have done only one dive on air after getting my nitrox card.

Dang, wish I could get hold of the stuff that easily. Honestly, it would be easier and cheaper to support a cocaine habit than dive nitrox regularly where I live.

Wow! Sorry to hear that. I have access to a tri-mix station. Not to rub it in, but here is a comparison of cost.

I have a shop about a mile from my house. To fill my AL80 doubles from empty costs US$20 plus tax. They charge $10 per cylinder (regardless of size).

The shop I work for is about 35 miles away. It's an easy drive. To fill those same AL80 cylinders with Nitrox is US$4.35.

There's a shop in Ottawa that fills any cylinder with EAN32 for $5CA. I love Canada.

Thanks to all for a most informative thread. I've always used 1.4 as my MOD and 1.6 as my contingency depth. In practice, I've never come close to either. I plan on keeping it that way. You've sparked my intrest, so I am going to sign up for the next Advanced Nitrox class.

There's a shop in South Florida that does Nitrox fills for about $5 U.S. any mix up to 40%

I paid $500 for all the nitrox I can use for a year. At the rate I'm going, that's going to be about 35 cents a fill . . . :)

Maybe they'll change their policy after you
