These are actual questions I have heard. Thankfully not from one of my students, or I'd have to tear up their OW card.

- If nitrox burns away rubber seals and hoses, what does it do to my lungs?
- Wont nitox make me goofy, like at the dentist?
- I dont dive deep enought to use that stuff.

Can I get a tank of that Nitrous stuff?

We are all fools, only in different ways....

I don't find the last "stupid question" all that "stupid". This seems to be a universal misunderstanding by anyone who hasn't been through a Nitrox course...

The above samples of questions are very common to the new nitrox diver, and a few that got certed but did not actually use that knowledge for awhile.....never a 'stupid' question when it comes to SCUBA. A nitrox sub section would be nice since SO many other threads get covered up at times with these questions. Being a mixed gas diver myself,,,a sub section dedicated to that level of gas blend and the issues around mixed gas would also be helpful and of interest.

You would think so. Come visit one of my classes, and hear some of the questions I get asked.
This is usually due to the way diver's first hear Nitrox explained:

"Nitrox has more oxygen than regular air"

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzt. WRONG WAY TO EXPLAIN IT.

"Nitrox has less nitrogen than regular air"

Now you have the diver thinking about the real goal of nitrox, rather than getting confused over the "more oxygen" part.

This is one of my two semantic quests: To get people to talk about Nitrox in terms of less nitrogen, and to have people describe the long hose as going BEHIND the neck, not AROUND the neck.

Roak

I'll give you the "I dont dive deep enough to use that stuff," one... People see divers with doubles and stage bottles under their arms with all sorts of lables they dont understand, and think nitrox must be for deep diving.

However, If a certified diver doesnt have the common sense to stop and think that we (EANx divers) might not have toxic, caustic or anesthetic gases in our tanks, then I dont want to dive anywhere near them.

For instance - I am an entry level skydiver. I dont go ask the instructors or jumpmasters if they dive with pots and pans in their containers.

Non-divers can ask all the crazy questions they want.

I always liked the one where a diver wanted to smoke on a boat but was afraid to because he thought my Nitrox tank would blow up. :D

If I want to get into something like Trimox <I will stay away from the pull my finger gas...lol> should I get certified in said gas mix? I am an old school diver for 23 years...never used gas mixes yet....always willing to try new things.

did you let him believe it so he didn't smoke? :eyebrow:
