For item #2. If your waiting to equalize when you feel the pain its normally to late. I normally equalize just before my head goes under water then every couple of feet after. This way you have less pressure differential to equalize. If you do decend to the point of pain try ascending a little and then equalize.

Florida in April, I'm envious!

The instructor said it's not the end of the world to not fully understand how it works, as long as when we dive, we have a good computer who will do all that calculation for us; dept, residual nitrogen in the blood, dive time, oxygen, etc.

Call me Old-Fashioned, but I believe it IS important to understand how the tables work, and the proper way to use them. If you depend on a computer and it craps out on you....thats the end of your diving until you get the 'puter fixed. But keep in mind that it takes a bit of practice to learn how to use them...just like anything else. But then again I am also leary of an OW course that is done all in one weekend, seems to me to be an awful lot to absorb in such a short period. Just my two cents worth!
NOW....hookup with a buddy and dive dive dive!

Well I don't think he meant that we shouldn't try to learn how the dive table works...it's easy to learn how it works if you only dive once in one day, but it was very hard to understand if you do more than one dive in the same day. :( I'll read the book and maybe I will understand after a few times. We intend to buy a computer anyway, and if the computer fails and I don't know how a dive table works, well I'll just end the day and get the computer fixed. For now, we are gonna rent anyway, as the class cost a lot of $$ since it was a whole weekend instead of during the week, so we're gonna save to buy equipment. :)

MissTwisties: Welcome to the board and good luck with the check out dives. As an aside, I don't think I've ever seen such a warm welcome on this website. (It's a friendly website, but wow!). I'll bet your screen name has something to do with it. I wonder if you would have received the same response under the name "HairyBackguy" etc.? Ha... Again, good luck!

For some reason, I am NOT feeling the love.................:D

Welcome fellow cold water diver. I am new to diving, (Jan OW cert.) and am in love. So much to see and do. I am on the other side of the country, but I am sure the diving is great in Mass. Again, welcome to the sport.
