Hi everyone, I am trying to understand the difference between 1st stage and 2nd stage regulators. can a 2nd stage regulator be used as a primary? Can someone explain?

Surfratforlife: the first stage attaches to the tank. It reduces the pressure from the tank to an intermediate pressure.

The second stage is connected to the first stage by a hose. It reduces the pressure from the intermediate pressure to ambient water pressure. The second stage supplies air when when you inhale.
