As far as shops go, I have dealt with almost all of them. One shop in town has a bad name and everyone would tell you to avoid it. But the shop was bought out and the person that was the problem is now gone. I do know the new owner and he seem nice and honest.
Are you absolutely sure that he no longer has any affiliation with the shop?

I've dove Mermet Spings in Lower Illinois... check out the website(site has same name). This will be about a 2-3 hr drive from Nashville. est. I usually visit them when I'm in Western Ky for business. Lots of neat places and as a training site is one of the best, except vis can be bad some days.
Also try Pennyroyal, in Hopkinsville, Ky. I haven't dove this site yet, but have heard great news about it so far... check the threads for a phone # there site is under construction... I talked with one of the operators about a visit and he was great! Missed the trip cause I was sick:(

As many have said here check the websites for the sites and research the threads here to get the skinny on the different places. Furthermore others and myself here are just looking for more chances to dive so post a day you'll be somewhere and someone is bound to want to go! Good luck.

I spoke to the new owner... Steve... He actually came to visit me at the Y where I teach... He and the some of the other shop owners in town are swearing on their mothers graves that this other fellow, who's name we are not saying out of common courtesy, is gone. I haven't seen him the very few times I was in the shop since then. And based on Steve's work I'll be giving the shop a new chance. But, I wasn't there when he was fired and I don't know anything beyond what I was told. But Steve, the new owner, himself told me that he was gone.

There was another Post just after this one on Pennyroyal, in Hopkinsville, Ky. I've not dove it yet but I thought I heard some reports that say it is very clear for a quarry....... but very cold.

I did my OW cert. at Martha's quarry. I thought it was nice. There are no air fills there, and port-a-pots are the norm., but the diving is pretty cool. There is an old mining building with conveyor belt in there, which is cool to swim in and around.

:) there are air fills at Martha's. A compressor and either 6 or 12 tanks banked.

I think that sinus squeeze created a touch of amnesia:D

Hello there. Its nice to meet you. I am rather new to diving as well, but i took my certification in Mermet Springs IL., very cool place to dive. A 747 airplane is sunken there, as well as a bus, telephone booth and a recent addition in Dec of this year, a train car that derailed near the quary. You should definately check it out sometime!!! Ashley :)

I could have sworn that they didn't have them...ooops!:)

I live in Franklin (right outside of Nashville) and I LOVE Blue Water Scuba located right off I-40 on White Bridge Road.

They are under pretty new ownership and have an Instructor there that is world famous, Larry. He has a ton of logged dives, and I do mean a ton!! He is certified with PADI, NAUI and SSI. But their whole team is fun and really cool (Danielle, Tim, Steve, Kevin).

I just certified with them (at Martha's Quarry) and my significant other (long term boyfriend) is working on becoming an associated SSI DiveCon with them. He is already a PADI DiveMaster and wanted to become associated with a shop. Blue Water is primarily SSI, hence him working on DiveCon there. There is a place in Franklin Cool Springs area but I did not like the corporate attitude there. And too, they take a lot of people through training at the same time. You get more personal service through Blue Water!!

Email me and I will give you my phone number so that maybe we can get together!! Nashville has a rather large dive community, larger than I thought!!
