I have just started getting interested in getting scuba cert. I grew up in south Fl and have snorkeled everywhere here and been racing hobies since I was 14. I have an artificail heart valve and take a couple of medications and my primary doctor says hedoes not feel confortable signing my release. Can anyone comment of the affects diving will have on me?

I don't think anyone will tell you to disregard your primary doctor's advice. That said, you may want to consider a second opinion from a doc who is familiar with the special issues related to diving. Some of the medical folks will probably chime in, but if they don't try posting this in a medical forum. The Duke folks I'm sure could steer to to a cardiac specialist who could comment on your specific situation. I suspect they will pick up on this thread and comment, but if they don't, reach out directly. Good luck.

A good source for diving related medical information is Divers Alert Network. DAN. They may have some info on your specific situation and you can also call them and talk to them about recommendations. They also might be able to recommend a doctor in your area.

I found this quickly. Don't know if you fall into this descriptions but it doesn't sound like it's a definite no. It sounds more like you will have to work with your doctor or a dive doctor closely.
