I did the drive from College Station last week... seven hours of driving, blah.

Next time I visit South Padre for some offshore diving, I'm flying down to Harlingen, and renting a car for a couple of days. The extra cost would be partially offset by not having to spend an additional day in a hotel.

Just the opposite. Remember the 24 hours rule about flying?

If driving, you can get out of the water at noon Sunday, hop into your car, and be home by 7 or 8 pm that night.

If flying, you'll have to get a room for Sunday night to offgas.

By the time you factor in everything involved with flying, getting to the airport early, checking baggage, flight time, retrieving baggage, waiting at the rental counter, etc you are only saving a few hours for all the extra money.

17 miles off Port Isabel in 135 feet. Not much of a novice dive site.

I don't know much about the ship. How tall is it? Assuming it lands on its keel (yea right) it may be ok.

The ship will be placed at a depth of 135ft. It measues 80 ft from keel to the top of wheel house so you'll be on the wreck at 55ft if all goes well.
