Can anyone tell me some places that are good for diving in the TB area? I know a lot of the water is really brown and murky on the beaches, but maybe someone knows of a great spot where the water is delightfully clear and full of amazing and exotic creatures and corals?

Yeah, I'm asking a lot.

Actually, just some nice, close-to-home diving would be great, if anyone has a suggestion. :)

Thanks!

Actually there are several nice shore diving spots just south of TB. Spanish Rocks, the Sugar Barge, Venice beach & if ya don't mind going a bit farther south, Red Rocks. Shore diving along this coast requires ya to pick your days. Long periods of light easterly winds generally means better viz.

Do you have access to a boat?

Where in the area do you live?

I am from Bradenton, and used to go out with scubaquest. 2 dive charters run around 85 with your equipment and about 110 with thiers. They usually go in water from 40 - 60' Viz can be anywhere from 10 to 50'. 3 tankers go out upto 20 miles offshore. Here is a link to their site.

There are some beach dives off of Bradenton as well. Spanish Rocks and the Sugar Barge.

I now have access to a boat and go out in the gulf alot. Most of my dives are somewhat advanced.

I may or may not have access to a boat, depending on whether our friend wants to let us use it. I may have to rely on beach dives; I'll definitely check out Scubaquest and Spanish Rocks.

How clear is the water out there?

Sugar Barge and Venice beach, the visibility is limited! Last time I went to Sugar Barge, the visibility was ~1-2 ft. At least I had some dives in.

Yeah, I guess that's what counts...is it always that bad, though?

The shore diving viz can vary widely depending on the weather, tides and currents. I have seen the viz at Venice as good as 15 ft recently, and less than a foot on a couple of ocassions. 10 or less is the norm.

Here is some info on the shore dives
Red Rocks
Red Rock Directions

• Take I-75 south to the North River Road exit. (It’s the one right after Jacaranda) Go south on North River Road.
• Cross over 41 & the Road changes its name to South River Road, follow that until you come to Pine Street.
• Turn left on Pine Street.
• Follow Pine Street to 776
• Cross over 776 & the street name will change to Placida Road.
• Follow Placida for a while until you get to the Boca Grande Causeway. turn right
• Follow the causeway to the toll booth ($4), after you get through the toll booth; just follow the road all the way to the 4 way stop sign (5th St. W.).
• Turn right at the stop sign & then left at the flag pole (Gulf Bvld.).
• Follow the road to the next stop sign (Gulf Bvld. & Sea Breeze Ct.).

Ahead of you will be a white, tower lighthouse (Boca Grande Range Light - 26 44’27.6”N, 82 15’46.8”W). That is the Sandspur Tower. Parking lot is located on your right, just north of that tower($2 to park all day). (Remember, you're heading south, if you pass the tower, you went too far.)

The reef is kinda small, about 1 acre in size, its 100 yards west of the Boca Grande range light. If the viz is good, you can see the reef from the shore.

Spanish Rocks
I-75 south from Tampa to the Bradenton/ State road 64 exit( there is an A and B so take the A exit it will head you toward the beach). You are going to take the exit toward the right. Stay on that road for about 8 miles or so until you get to Gulf Dr.( you will hit Gulf Dr. after you cross the intercostal waterway)You make a left on Gulf Dr. and take it down about 1/2 mile. Just before the curve to the left there is a beach access and parking. That is where you want to be. It is a small sand lot between some houses and apartments. Just pull in there and park. Gear up walk down the beach to the left about 50 yards (6 houses) enter the water swim out about 50 yards and dive max depths 22ft.

Venice Beach Fossil hunt
From the south:

Head to Venice on I 75. Take exit 193 and head SW (coming from the south that’s a left turn) on Jacaranda. Turn right on Venice Ave. Stay on Venice Ave until after you’ve crossed the bridge to the downtown area. Turn left at the second light after the bridge (Harbor - name not well marked). Turn right at the 5th street (Alhambra).

From the north:

Head to Venice on I 75. Take exit 200 (SR681) and follow it to US 41 where you'll turn left (south). Take US 41 to Business US 41 (Tamiami Trail) where you turn right. After you cross the bridge, you'll turn right on Venice Ave. Turn left at the first light (Harbor - name not marked). Turn right at the 5th street (Alhambra).

Park on the street as close to the dead end as possible. Be careful not to block the driveway to the condo. Keep your dive between the culverts to the south and the three pine trees to the north.

Have fun and be safe

Kim,

Wow! Thanks for all of that! You really put a lot of effort into that reply, and I appreciate it. Thanks so much!
