Im toying with the idea of a new dive boat, 12 pakish size. I have a place to dock it, Im just wondering how much demand there is out there? Also, does anybody know what the going rate is here PP for a boat dive through a shop? PM me if you want to keep it quiet....Im also toying with the idea of a half day dive half day fish trip kind of thing. Any thoughts on that would also be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi Wildcard,

30-35 dollars a seat, with variable staffing ratios allowed. Several captains have told me their prices are going up $5 January one, it will be interesting to see if that happens. Personally, I think the best idea is to do a six pack and work the tax deduction angle of eco-tourism. Hook up with a researcher at U of H and have people do fish or turtle counts, low-key but meeting the non-profit requirements.

Just out of curiosity, what's the commercial permit situation on Oahu? It may be different there if they have private (non-state run) slips available. In Kona there's a long wait for a chance at a permit and a commercial passenger designation by the DLNR. From what I hear in Maui, you pretty much have to buy an existing business or a permit from someone that already has one.

Just curious.

Thanks for the input, questions and PMs. Im just kicking this idea around. Any other ideas or problems Im not thnking of are most welcome.

Easiset way is to just get a ramp permit and drag your boat home. Maui has a commercial opening coming up right after the fourth coming of Christ.

I'm 22nd on the waiting list for that Maui permit which is due to show up in the next several thousand years.

A friend of mine had 2 beach landing permits for Kaanapali beach back when they were $15. He sold his waterski business and 2 realatively worthless boats for what he thought was a good price at the time. They shut off the permits and a couple years later the guy he sold his business to sold 1 of the permits for something like 5 times what my friend sold the business for.
