For a number of quality, and economic reasons as well, we at Aldora have invested in our own fill company which we have named Altech Cozumel. The facility is on Ave 50 near Juarez and just across the street from La Mission.

WE have two new Bauer Compressors filling 20 4,500 PSI cascade tanks, each bank has dual in line Analox CO monitors, one is set at 3 ppm and gives an very loud audible alarm, the other is set at 10 PPM and will automatically shut off the compressor/s. For the time being we will also hand check each batch of tanks with a hand held Analox CO analyzer as we have been doing with EVERY tank from Meridiano.

For those that don't know, the cascade tanks are like storage tanks that allow the compressed gas to cool down before we fill the dive tanks. That means we don't have to over fill the dive tanks and come back for topping off...the air is already cool. The use of cascade tanks also means that even a momentary puff of CO at our roof top air intake would be diluted to a very low level. With this technique we can easily fill tanks that have consistent fills to 3450 or more and are essentially CO free.

Indeed we can now guaranty our tanks to be CO free and with complete fills to at least 3,450 PSI. With that comes a guaranty for your dives. More than 3400 psi and less than 3 PPM CO or your dive is free. The only qualifier is that your pressure gage has to be accurate, as does your CO tester.

As for Nitrox, we have big news in the use of our Brownie's Nitrox machine. Its cost was well over $50,000 but it is much easier to make precise Nitrox fills than the partial pressure method done by Meridiano, and in many ways much safer. Indeed, it is impossible to make a seriously dangerous Nitrox fill since the maximum a Membrane system can generate is 40% O2. We of course analyze each tank but there is no chance of screwing up badly.

At this moment Altech is filling only the tanks of Aldora Divers, but with much extra capacity and as others learn of our advanced methods and safety, there may be other shops that utilize our fills.

:medal: Sounds like an impressive big step in better quality and safety. I hope other shops will be coming for fills. :thumb:

Glad to see another fill option on Cozumel.
Wish you all the best in the new company.

Side note: you will still need to fill the scuba tanks slowly so that you don't heat up the air going into the scuba tanks. Fast fill equals hot air.

Thanks, Jim Breslin

Where would that heat energy be coming from?

Hooray! Zero G, over on the mainland, has one of Brownie's Nitrox machines. It's a very nice setup.

When the high pressure air comes from the bank and into the scuba tank, heat is generated by the movement of the air into the scuba tank.
When you fill a tank, you should keep the rate of fill to less than 500 psi per minute with air and 50 psi if filling pure o2.

Hi Dave,

That is excellent news! I went out to dinner with you and another group of divers from Aldora at La Choza last year and you had mentioned you were doing this. I was back on the island this January diving with you guys and Memo had said you guys had the compressors sitting in Cancun customs.

Great news! I have to ask though, will this change your prices at all? Will you still be charging your divers $10 for Nitrox? I understand compressors cost money so I am not one to complain :-)

I remember there was some talk last time about undercutting Meridiano prices.

It is called heat from compression and is a type of heat energy. sorry the fireman in me coming out.
I couldn't explain it. I know that a tank gets hot if you fill it fast, then loses pressure when it cools off, and it damaging to the tank - even dangerous. And when I drain my pony to remove the valve, it gets cold.

Heat from compression should be explained by

PV = nRT

(V)olume is constant as is R. Can't remember n. As (P)ressure goes up, so does (T)emperature.

Sounds good anyway
