ugp, (How do you pronounce that!?) ;)

I'm here in Oregon, and for an Adult it costs around $250.00 for your "Open Water" certification.

Gear on the other hand, can run kinda high... but while you're sitting there counting your pennies, I can make this promise to you... "You wont regret the training... and you'll wonder why you didn't start earlier!" :crafty:

Keep us posted!

Would you like up front or lifetime cost$? ;)

Gary D.

well, not life time, and thanks for responding. I knew that cert. would run around 250, but it comes to equiptment sp*.I understand that it might be a bit before everthing is bought, and you might get new ones, but starting and getting something that is quality.

masks,fins,snorkal
suit, ?
gauges
tank
bcd.s
regulators

any thing else?

thanks for the help everyone!!!!

Welcome. Let's see here, first you said Be Kind in the subject of your post, that's kind of like waving a steak in front of a starving Lion. :D Not to worry, our bark is worse than our bite.

As for how much will it cost you? That is a tough one. How much is your relaxation and pleasure worth? Myself, I haven't found a figure I can place on it. Just start out slow and rent for a while is all I can say. Try different makes and models of gear. You'll figure out what you need.

Then comes the fun part, buying all the toys you absolutely can't live without. lol

Have fun and dive safe.

ugp,

The fever can be quite costly. If you have restraint and can take good advice from the SB community (and ther are plenty of good people here that will help), then it's not too bad.

Plan on $200 for basic gear (mask/fins/etc). Check around for OW certification training, but I'd say $250 plus cost of OW dives.

After certificaion (without gear), your looking at $65-70 for most 2 tank dives here in FL with BC/reg rentals. Rentals are great to learn what you don't want (and sometimes what you do - but not often). If you buy the whole shabang, gear will probably run anywhere from $1200-$3000 (new), and proportionally less for used equipment (~ 1/2 price if in really good condition and if you can find it right).

$500 gets you started, then rent when you dive.
$1000 gets you training and decent gear, but rent tanks.
$1500 gets all you need with good gear.
$2000 gets you going with very good gear.
$2500 gets you great gear, maybe a computer.

Your prices will vary depending on cold/warm water, more, etc.
Keep reading and searching SB. You'll learn a lot - I did.

Welcome to the board, every one here is fifty times friendlier than usenet newsgroups, no need to worry!

Here's an average cost breakdown on what you can expect:

Certification: 200 for class, 50 for books/materials, 125 for open water check out dives. Usually runs 250 - 400 around here in NC. As you'll hear 100 times on here, the instructor is more important than the agency (SSI, PADI, NAUI etc).

Personal Gear: Usually required before Open Water Cert.
Mask = 30 - 80 (Fit is important, try on and buy in a shop)
Snorkel = 10 - 60 (Not used much after certification, you can save money on this one)
Fins = 30 - 300 (Fit is very important, too stiff and your leg will hurt, too soft and you will waste energy)
*** Boots may be required for open heeled fins at some shops.

After cert (rent and try out others first)
Regulators (first and second stage): 125 - 1100
BC: 150 - 1000
Gauges: 150-300 (400 - 1000 for a computer)
Wetsuit: 50 - 300
Drysuit: 800+
Weightbelt: 30 - 60
Tanks: 80 - 150 (Mostly rented)

This isn't meant to be accurate, you can find detailed prices at a local dive shop or on the internet. Just designed to give you a basic idea. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Our classes are $249 and that includes all the class materials that are yours to keep, book, workbook, video, CD, etc...

And startup gear, mask, snorkel, fins, boots can be had for under $100 - or up to $200 if you want great stuff with a bag, soft strap, defog, etc...

Really a dollar or 2 one way or the other should not be your deciding factor. Go visit a few shops, and check where do they do their pool work, what is the facility like, what kind of gear selection do they have. Can you exchange stuff even after it's been wet if it doesn't work out for you, etc...

Like to invite you down to visit us if you get the chance! We've got a huge indoor pool right in our shop. Right at I-35 and Crosby in Carrollton (just south of Beltline).

Hope you can visit!
