For small fish like panfish I would recommend a small tripoint, won't damage much meat. They have bigger ones and I've speared fish up to around 15# in salt water. Fairly easy to get the tips out too. You could just us a single barb screw on tip for fish if they are all over a couple pounds a piece. I'd try both and see which one is easyest for you. You don't need double barbs or release tips. Good Luck!

I have just built my first pole spear and am wondering what kind of tip to use??? I am primarily going to be using it in fresh water for fish around the 4-5 pound range at best. Any help will be appriciated. Thanks, Komi

I was thinking about a paralizer tip or something like that.but I don't know anything about tips. When you say a tripoint are you talking like a frog gig???

Yes a three prong (paralizer) should do just fine for your needs. It is a lot easier to get the fish off a pole spear with that than a hawaian flopper.
