HI all,
My wife and I visited her sister Karen in Clearwater a month or so ago, and we went to Point of Rocks off of Crescent Beach in Siesta Key, and had a blast.
It was pretty much the best shore snorkeling we have found in the Tampa area (although Siesta Key is quite a bit south of St Pete), and it was Karen's first experience snorkeling and she loved it. I'm pretty seasoned to great snorkeling and diving like the Caymans, the Keys, and Maui, and it really was worth it - we saw the usual reef fishys and there is actually a shallow reef ledge that extends to the north of the main Point of Rocks shoreline that is really cool with sponges and undercuts etc.
Then we waded in the shoreline rocks for a while and saw tons of life in the tide pools.
So we had to leave to go back to Ohio (cold, murky water - yuk!), and Karen tells us that she really wants to snorkel again with her new mask etc, so if there is anyone that wants to buddy up with Karen (preferably female), please PM me and I'll pass on the info.
Treasure Island is also pretty nice. I snorkeled out to a rock jetty near the point at Treasure Island and saw lots of life out there and amost swam face first into a manatee, so thats a nice area too.
