miskatonic:
You are more likely to be killed by a falling fruit then to be killed or attacked by a shark.

No kidding.
Yeah, especially when you walk under one of them watermelon or pumpkin trees.

Why is fear the most common reaction when the subject of diving comes up?
So many people live in fear most of their lives.
A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

that can hardly be questioned.

but ...

fear or worry is a natural part of the human condition. It is there to make us cautious and aware - it can be a fine tool if founded in reality. If there is a real reason to worry, then worry is there to make us aware of that reason so we can take counter measures.

I'd say that it is reasonable, and constructive to harbour at least some trepidation about something you know is potentially life threatening - and that you also know you have zero experience with.

That is not to say it should stop you from acting and getting that knowledge and experience (remove stressor, change perception of stressor, change perception of ability to cope with stressor and all that).

Anyhow I'd say that's why yet-to-be-divers respond with some fear.
