Hi All,

I need some fin advice. I’ve been out of diving for about 23 years and need some new fins. I used to dive USD Super Rockets, but these are a little small in the foot pocket causing pressure/pain on the tops of my feet.

My LDS loaned me a pair of Aqualung V-teks out of his rental stash for a couple weeks of pool work, but I missed the power of the S-Rockets. With as much as the equipment has changed, I’m bewildered where to start. I see that Scuba-Pro offers the Jet in larger sizes, but wonder if some of the newer designs/materials should be considered. About the only thing I know is that I do not want split fins.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Fritz

The newer designs haven't improved much on the Jet IMHO, especially if you know you don't want splits. Mares Avantis and Quattros are favorites of mine as well, and I still use them when I dive wet.

By the way. I wear size 13 booties and do dive wet.

Thanks,
Fritz

I used to think split fins were all hype, then one day on a dive boat in Mexico the DM threw his bio fins at me, he said 'try these'.

the first thing i did when i went back to the dive shop was buy a pair,

but i'm not trying to sell you split fins or even bio fins, i'm just saying that from now on I'd like to try them out first.

Go find a set of jets, XL, or XXL, or if you need something in between get a set of turtles. Still a great solid blade like you used in the past.

Thanks!

I'm leaning towards the jets, but will also look into the Mares. My LDS may also have some AquaLung Blades that he will part with for a couple days.

Thanks again!
Fritz

You MUST try on the Super Rockets II! The II version has a larger and deeper foot pocket that is very comfortable! Not saying that this will be the fin you want, but at least try it on if you liked your original Super Rockets. These are very new and you may have to order them--I doubt many shops have them on the shelves yet.

I also give high marks to the Cressi Rondine. I like them even better than my Super Rockets II when I'm not pushing my doubles through the water.

The XL jets are probably going to be too small for you - I'm a size 13 also and even in thin wetsuit boots they are tight. But the XXL Jets fit great as do Turtles.

If you go this route - here's some info to help you figure out the sizing for you and your boot/jet fin combo. http://www.kidspot.org/personal/scubaboard/fincomparison.html

Just for your info - have fun deciding :)

Aloha, Tim

I was like you before NO split-fins, but then I decided to try splits and see what they were all about, and I went with Tusa Xpert Zooms. I fell in love myself, but people either love em' or hate em' it seems. From what I have seen there are no people in between but I've been wrong before. I had the Mares Volo (non-split) before and really liked those too :D

My personal favorites are the SP Jet Fins. The XXL's would probely be your best bet. They have the power to push doubles and they are great with singles. They are the most durable thing out there in the scuba world and have stood the test of time! If you try them and are not happy with them (which is not likely) they have a excellent resale value to boot. So try on a pair in the water and see if they move you too. I like the Mares Quattro's too ,but Jet fins are my absolute favorite!
