I own a very nice Uwatec Smart Z that is AI. A long time ago I took off the transmitter because it interfered with my long hose on doubles. I put a pressure gauge on a 24" hose not long after I started diving for redundancy and to make setup easier (Remember your computer has to be on and near the transmitter to check pressure before kitting up). Never actually missed the transmitter since I used air pressure to calculate when I needed to head up, not my computer telling me when. I did use the computer to calculate my NDL's but now just use gauge mode.I STILL say the numerous advantages and conveniences of an AI hoseless wrist computer outweigh the inconvenience of a "possible" aborted and early terminated dive due to a computer failure.
BTW My Uwatec Aladin 2G was under $400 with the DSS mount.
