We're staying at The Great House for three nights in July before moving on to Turneffe. The Smoky Mermaid in TGH's side yard is pretty good and certainly convenient. But I'm wondering if there are any other restaurants in BZ City we should try.

It doesn't have to be fancy as we're not fancy people. On the other hand, my wife doesn't share my appreciation for hole-in-the-wall type places. We, well mostly me, would prefer places that are as authentically Belizean as possible. I can eat in an American-type restaurant any time.

Dinner only. We'll be out and about in the countryside during the day.

Anyone?

Hey Downing

I know lots of hole in the wall places but ya missus would probably not be happy there.

The problem is Belize does not have too much overnight business and normally someone stays just one night and usually picks TSM to eat or eats at there hotel.

The Radisson just up the road has a restaurant and I have eaten there but cant say its fantastic but the surrounding are pleasant and they offer Belizean fare.

There are a few new places such as

Celebrity Restaurant located at the marine parade volta building, Belize City 327, Belize
Tel number 501 22 37272 they get good reviews and its not too far from where you are staying. I have not eaten there as I was rarely ever in Belize at night.

Not sure if its still open but the Princess Hotel has a Waterfront Bar and Restaurant also.

I've eaten at the Celebrity about 5 times. Good food. Reasonable price.

Smokey Mermaid, one good meal, one pretty bad. Overpriced.

Down near the casino is a place called Jambal Jerkpit Too. It doesn't look like much. It's related to the original on Ambergris and has some pretty fine Jerk seafood and chicken. Good rice and beans too. I was there during the day, so I'm not sure what it's like down that way at night.

The Radisson has an Ok bar/restaurant. They also serve food at the pool bar including a kind of hot stone thing. Pretty good, but again, everything at the Radisson is pricey.

If you're going to/from the Celebrity at night, take a cab. Some pretty creepy dudes hang out in the park and along the sea wall.

There's also a restaurant in the casino. The menu looked good, but I didn't eat there.

If a cruise ship is in port, you can get into the terminal with a passport. Lots of good places to eat and drink.

Wish I was going.

You used to be able to get a pretty good feed at "Old Belize", a cab ride out of town (maybe 10 minutes).

I recommend Celebrity. Jambel's Jerk Pit has good Jamaican food but the bar gets overcrowded after 5PM on the weekends. Chon Saan Palace (not to be confused with New Chon Sin nor Chow Saan) has relatively good Chinese Food. Old Belize has a great menu as well. Nerie's downtown on Queen Street is great for lunch but not for dinner. Macy's was good but I have not been there in a long while. Not sure if Carol's Pizza is still operating but they were far better than Peppers. I have been to Bird's Isle several times and I've had hit and miss dinners over there; might be worth checking out. They have a deck on the seaside. The one I would really recommend is the Riverside Tavern. It's owned by the Bowen Bottling Company located on the bank of the Haulover Creek in town. They have a big parking lot, sports bar, riverside deck, and great food. Affordable too. The sports bar might draw a crowd due to the World Cup Football tournament going on but the deck is peaceful. Then of course, you can come to have dinner out here on our private island. No problem arranging that. We're less than half an hour boat ride from the Radisson Dock.

That last option sounds very attractive!

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I apologize for the delay in responding, but things have been a bit hectic here lately.

HP: Could we get a ride back to BZ City after dinner or would we have to swim for it? I'm worried about cramps. :D

Seriously, your offer sounds great. I'm thinking we would want to do that our first night in BZ City since I'm not sure what time we'll be returning to The Great House on Thursday and Friday nights.

I'm sending a PM but thought I would post this just in case it doesn't go through, which seems to happen a fair amount around here. If you don't get my PM, let me know.

I ate at Old Belize once. Never again. I actually asked the waitress if they used old dishwater to make the iced tea.
The big treat for me is to eat at Subway.
