Hi. I' and my son are new divers. I'm 42 and he's 13. All because we were watching some divers fix some water cannons at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino on the discovery channel.
My son said, “Dad I’d like to do that.”
I asked, “What, build a water cannon?”
He said, “No, learn to dive.”
A member of my grotto is an instructor and his wife a dive master.
After letting him “discover scuba” he was hooked.
I’m so proud of him. He got a little nervous, panicked once but pulled through and did it.
We have a lot to learn and are looking forward to doing it together.

One question I had a hard time equalizing and a week later and my ear still feels muffled, like I have earplugs in. No pain though. Could this just be wax that was pushed by the pressure up against my eardrum?

Hey, congratulations to you both on your cert!!

With the ear if you had trouble equalizing then you may have a mild barotrauma. As blood or fluid accumulates in the middle ear a diver may experience a partial, complete or muffled hearing loss. I'd go see a doc to get checked to see if there is any lasting damage, but normally after a while it should sort itself out.

Look at: DAN Divers Alert Network Asia-Pacific : Ear & Sinus Injuries for a bit more info

Congrats to you BOTH!!!
The ear thing could be just some crud in your tubes or water in your inner ear, hopefully it will clear up,if not a visit to a ENT is not a bad idea,,,,
remember to clear frequently and often! don't force it and you should be fine,
But don't dive till it clears or you get the OK from the Doc!
Good luck and have fun!Dive safe!
My son is 11 and has been diving a year now and just loves it!
Brad

Thanks for the greetings and ear advice. My ears finally cleared and feel like normal now.

This is something you can share with your son for the rest of your lives. I wish we had started diving sooner. I qualified at 61, my sons are 39 and 21. We have really enjoyed trips we have taken together for diving. We all have a passion for diving although the youngest prefers warm water.

My oldest son and I got in two dives this afternoon at our local quarry, water temp ranged from 45F to 52F. we still had fun.

I have problems with wax getting pushed against my eardrum with the pressure. I try to use carbamide peroxide before and after diving. What's really strange is if I forget I can get air stuck behind the wax and when I surface it bubbles through the wax. Super loud but not uncomfortable.
