xnight:
the instructor that certified me recommended i get am OMS rig cause he swears by it, do you understand where im coming from?
I dont think your instructor is advising you properly. A 100# lift BC is for DOUBLES, not single tanks. Are you going to be diving doubles right away???

dont make me feel like a moron for buying the equipment "YOU" dont like (tons of people in here even said if a beginer is gonna start with that kind of setup....whats the big deal?),

We are not trying to make you feel like a moron. You asked for our advice, and thats what you got. Lots of people have bought beginner setups, we have all been there, and usually, it ends up on ebay, and then you buy all of your stuff over again to get the "right" stuff. I, myself, would prefer to buy my gear only once, and not have to sell everything because I found out that some instructor sold me gear that I dont need...

We are only trying to help you from making a mistake. You seem to be hellbent on making this purchase, so do what you want...

You told everyone what you bought, they gave their opinion. You didn't like the response, because they are telling you that your setup doesn't make sense. Now you want to know how to configure it? If you knew enough to purchase this tech equipment, why is it you don't know how to configure it. You basically came off sounding like a kid that just got his driver's license and is asking whether he should buy a Hummer or a Ferrari to drive to school in.

Hopefully, you are starting to realize why you got the response you did. No one is bashing you. They are trying to bring you back to Earth. I went through 3 full sets of equipment over several years before I ended up with a BP/Wing. The only reason I went that route was due to the wreck penetration diving I do now.

You can't dive a 100lb wing with a single tank. Whoever sold you on that setup better have you sign a waiver. Read about deep diving, buoyancy, tech equip, doubles, stage bottles, lights, bailouts, on and on and on and then see why people need more lift, like 60lbs.... or better yet, don't read that stuff and live a little longer. What's your instructors name and number?

I would instead get a nice 30 or 45# wing (for singles), a simple backplate with standard harness (no cumberbund thingy), and no pockets. For the reg, instead of the Dacor, I would have gotten an Apeks. FOr wrist computer, I would go with the vyper.

I just figured out a new xtreme sport.

Light diver, 100lb wing filled with heliox.

Now tether the diver to the boat via the tag line, throw it in gear, and go.

Now your flying high!

Sorry.

XNight, it is not the choice of harness that people here question, but the size of your bladder. Most divers use 30-40 lb bladders for single tanks and 40-55 lb bladders for doubles. A 100 lb bladder is typically only used for specialty technical dives (e.g. mixed gas divers who take 5 or 6 tanks down). Large bladders are difficult to operate and you certainly don't want to do drift dives with them as they tend to act like a big wing. Read the following thread for a calculation on how much lift capacity you really need. If I were you I would seriously consider exchanging the 100 lb bladder for a much smaller one.

well this is the kind of reply i was waiting for.............i did sound like a kid because its my first BC and i have the cash to buy it......anything wrong with that, thats the original reason i came in here for...........the instructor has no clue what i ordered, he just told me that OMS was a good investment, im the ignorant one here.............but it took a lot just to get a simple answer.....and im changing the wing to the 45 lb lift..............and im on my way to find a forum more Novice oriented

Don't take my jest too serious. I'm probably the most blocked member on the board.

I do have some very nice upper end recreational gear that I was going to sell on eBay this winter. It's not intended for technical diving, which I hope your not planning on doing until you have some experience. If you are interested in getting some top notch recreational equipment used, but in impeccable condition, you can PM me.

BTW, OMS is good stuff. Apeks is great stuff. Suunto is great stuff. All of these companies make 'stuff' that fits a whole range of divers from novice to expert and to fit most budgets. The reg is your life support. Try a few out and buy the one that breathes well for you - most will. Think about serviceability from a local dive shop. The jacket style BC is simple and easy, and most of us on the board still use em for recreational diving. Dive the tables for a while, then look at a computer. The knowledge and experience you gain by knowing the tables will be valuable as you progress to the computer. Never use the comp as a crutch. I use the table values on a slate and a watch as a backup to my computer. Invest in a good fitting wet/dry suit based on the water temps where you dive. Hypothermia sucks and contributes to decompression illness.

Have fun, dive safe, and take your time!

Xnight, I did not mean to give you a hard time but you did ask what we thought. We (board members )see new divers sold on whatever makes the LDS the most profit all the time. There is nothing wrong with the OMS harness or bladder but if you were advised to get the 100 lb wing (or were not strongly advised not to get it if it was your idea) then your LSD/instructor is not providing you with good advise. Slow up, get some dive time logged and then decide for yourself what equipment best suits you.

IMO OMS makes good gear although I personally prefer a Fred-T plate with a Halcyon wing. The gear you have chosen, while not the optimal configuration, and not what I would chose, will be functional. Especially as a new diver it’s important to buy equipment that you’ll be able to get assistance with. If the divers you’re diving with are diving OMS than getting OMS is a good idea.

For me part of the fun of diving is trying new and tweaking existing gear configurations. If you end up diving a lot, I’d be surprised if your gear configuration is totally the same a year from now; so don’t stress about it too much. The key is to waste as little money as possible on bad gear selections. Fortunately there is a thriving market for used SCUBA gear; you could probably even sell a 100 lb lift bladder on E-bay. :lol3:

With that said here is my, hopefully constructive, criticism:

oms single bladder 100lbs lift bc – As previously “beat to death” reconsider the 100 lbs of lift.

optional cummerbund -- Try the system without it first. You can always add it later but I suspect you won’t want or need it (save some money for other toys).

Dacor viper metal reg and octo – I would take a look at Apex or Scuba Pro. I’ve only heard good things about both, from actual users, not someone trying to sell me what they sell. Additionally, both are well supported.

dive computer( i would appreciate input in regards to this $350.00 is all i can afford for computer) – If you can’t afford the computer you want, go simple (SPG, bottom timer and depth gauge) rather than spending money on a cheap computer you’ll be unhappy with. Once you can afford the computer you want the gauges will make good backups.

xnight...you asked the board what we thought of your gear.

You got the feedback you requested (consensus opinion is that most of your choices were crap), and some of us answered your question about a suitable computer/timer...but yet you had the temerity to come back and act hostile and tell us we're idiots for responding to your post.

See any disconnect here?

Have fun with your Graf Zeppelin bladder...
