Simple enough question- when did you first dive doubles?

November 1988 a week after my AOW class. Something like 5,050 dives ago.

I was on the Wahoo taking my AOW class and the Captain said -- you're a big guy you want doubles. ....... next week I got em. I have not looked back since. I own 22 sets of doubles now .................... all sizes, both steel and aluminum.

One is none Two is one !

BUDS 68' I wasn't as big then, but lugging those twin 90's around sure gave you a sense of worth (or not).

Somewhere around 200 dives and 2 years of diving... although doubles aren't considered "technical" in nature (I've many more OW dives with them than single tanks now), I didn't consider wearing doubles until I'd considered "tech" level courses.

Around 80 dives I started swimming with doubles. At 110 dives I added a stage. At 115 I added a second stage..... At 120 I got some steel doubles.

This is not to say anyone should do this too.

Me too - First dive in doubles was on dive 35 in a dry suit and a stage bottle. OW checkouts were in a dry suit.

I thought they were and that it would be such a big accomplishment to try them. I wanted to go the tech route. I even knew that when I started diving only one year ago on Dec 5. To date, I have dove doubles in a dry suit more than a single in a wet suit. It is very reasonable to dive doubles when that is the equipment required to most safely do the dive (e.g. when redundancy is critical). There is no need to carry the extra equipment just to say you do it.

In general, they are very balanced and easy to handle. As long as you can safely and quickly do shutdowns, you can use them.

I am 5'6", 100lbs, female - I use 2 - 100cu ft steel tanks and a 30 cu ft stage bottle. If I can do it, most can. I am nothing special physically.
