I would like to apologize on behalf of Canadians for the disgraceful behavior of fans at the hockey game in Montreal last night. For those who haven't heard, fans booed during the singing of the US national anthem.

The kind of behavior is horrible, and really is not indicative of the average Canadian. It makes me ashamed. In fact, its not surprising that it happened in Quebec; you won't see that kind of behavior else where in Canada. Please keep that in mind.

Regardless of people's opinions on the war, it is not right to treat our closest allies that way. Its not right that we're not supporting our closest allies period, but thats a whole seperate issue.

Thanks.

I received a telephone call last night from two good friends in Pointe St. Claire, PQ. They were concerned that I'd been recalled to active (unlikely at best).

In my experience, their concern is far more indicative of our Northern friends.

Thx Darryl,

It's that way in most countries IMO. The few, (zealots on the extreme sides of ANY issue), always make the many look bad. Important concept to understand.

I was equally ashamed of the Americans who put your flag up backwards or upside down several years ago at a hockey game.

Bozo's, one and all.

New, glad your basically clear of any call up. My brother in the SeaBee reserves is on standby right now. Hope this thing gets done fast.

Well said!

American's are our closest friends!
I don't agree with some of the way's they do things.
But then I don't agree with the way my wife does some things.
But if push came to shove, Canada will always be there for the USA
Remember what grass roots Canadians did after 9/11
We took American's stranded at airports into our homes and took all planes in to help clear USA air space.

Goverment's will come and go, but the grass root people in North America will always look out for each other.

While this may be a bit boorish, it certainly doesn't erase our appreciation of assistance and intangibles since 9/11.

that hockey fans don't speak for Canada???

I don't think anyone is offended by anything
hockey fans do. After all.....they're, well, hockey fans.

HEY!!!!

U dissing hockey fans!!! :upset: Maybe the Oilers will meet the Wings in the playoffs and then we'll see what happens :)

The only possible excuse for them that I can think of is that they were probably drinking real beer (you know, not the watered-down stuff you guys have down there :)).

Thats still not an excuse though :(

First of all, my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those killed in active military duty and in training. May those risking their lives even as I type this return safely home when the war is over and may they all be treated with dignity and respect upon their return (irregardless of personal convictions about the war, nationalities or anything else).

Booing a sports team that happens to be playing your hometown favourite is discourteous enough (and asinine - the home team would look mighty silly if the out-of-towners hadn't showed).

Booing a national anthem under *any* circumstances is disgraceful behaviour. In the current situation it's not only rude, it's unbelievably stupid. Friendly relations that have been carefully maintained for years can be lost through shortsighted, *purposeless* hurtful behaviour and meaningless verbal attacks on nationalities and their symbols. Doesn't matter who started it, either - this isn't kindergarten.

Unfortunately, this kind of behaviour at sporting events is not new - what happened in Montreal has happened before, on both sides of the border - and elsewhere.

Maybe the refs need to be able to penalize the fans for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Kicking them out would be a good start.

As a former Montreal-area resident, I'd like to add a caveat to dvleemin's commentary on Quebec fans that applies to this kind of behaviour in general: please remember that you can't hear those who aren't booing.

Meanwhile, I'm hoping the Edmonton fans at the game don't disgrace us when Washington comes to town tomorrow. They will have travelled a long way under difficult and no doubt frightening circumstances just so that we (and Calgary!) could have some hockey. They deserve our thanks *and* applause.

Whew. Thanks for reading. Cat

I hope we never lose that:)

I'm sure that none of the decent Americans will hold it against any decent Canadians though.

(you know, not the watered-down stuff you guys have down there ).

That's why I have mine imported from the north!

They BETTER not. I'm going to be at the game tomorrow, and I'll be LESS than impressed if they do. And if someone anywhere near my reach tries that, they're going to be in for a very big surprise.
