My understanding is RV is for Research Vessel...MV is for? What designates a boat specifically as being a research vessel? Are there any other classifications?

Just curious.

Thx,
Matthew

I just finished Deep Descent (about diving the Andrea Doria).

I was just interested as to how/why the Wahoo was given a designation as a research vessel. Is this just a matter of paperwork, i.e. anyone can declare that their boat is a research vessel, or are there real criteria that a craft has to meet in order to receive such a designation?

Again, just curious as a non-boat owner as to how all this works...

Thx,
Matthew

Why CV for aircraft carrier - never worked that one out....

There's also MY - Motor Yacht, though I have never seen one that bares and resemblance to a yacht!!

Hi

I hate to be pedantic but none of these are acronyms - an acronym is a word made from the initial letters of a compound pharse or term (e.g NATO).

Just one of my little pet hobby horses

Ian

PS

GTV is a Gas Turbine Vessel (as in GTV Asia Frieghter)
