I was stationed at K-bay and lived in Kailua 2000-2003. I'll be back in December, renting a nice house on the bay in Kaneohe this time. I have a 11' zodiac with a 20HP that I plan on exploring around the bay with. Any decent diving spots? The closest I've dove in the area was off the base on the east side - facing Kailua. Never on the k-bay side. Heard a lot about sharks and muck... Was just trying to avoid the long drive to the north shore for all my dives (shark cove, 3 tables, etc)

Even north bay can be a little murky. However, just outside of the bay is some of the best diving I've done since coming to Hawaii. Between Moku Manu and a couple of sites I'm not allowed to give out (sworn to secrecy), you shouldn't be bored. Inside the bay generally bottoms out at 40 feet, and there's not much to see there but mud and a few stingrays. There are lots of baby hammerheads, but I've never seen them. As a matter of fact, the only shark I've ever seen was a whitetip. There is some small stuff, too. I've found flame angels, a rare anglerfish, and apparently, there's a rare species of butterfly (Chaetodon trifascialis) that has found its way into the bay recently but I have yet to find that.
