The weather forecast is not good, at least for my seasonal bones. The high is in the mid 60s. That is way cold! How much does a trip to warmer climates cost? I am really not ready to quit until next year.

Randy

We were talking about maybe in November or early December doing a
1 nite "el-cheap-o special" trip to Vortex and Morrison Springs.
Air temps slightly warmer, but water temps stay at a constant
68f all winter long and no thermocline.
Cost would be $25 for Vortex fee, air fills, Bunkhouse at Vortex $15 bucks,
Morrison Springs - FREEBIE, gas, and grill out some steaks or burgers
while there.

Key Dates to avoid are Nov 19th (AL-AU Game), Nov 12th (AU-GA game),
Dec 3 (Dive Sports super sale and gear giveaway.... gotta be there for that.)

so... if anyone is interested, we might be able to take a whole North
Alabama contingent down.

Mike_s, you should start a thread or somethin', cause I would definitely want to be included. I kept of with the recent trip that many went on a couple weeks ago and it seems they had way too much fun for us too have missed out on! (I know, my own fault). I have never been to the springs, or any springs for that matter, but I am very good at following instructions. I will be happy to assist once a date is agreed on.

Lemme know when as well - the more notice the better :D

I'd be open for Cypress too!

let me know as far in advance as possible. I live with my dad who had alzheimers and have to arrange somone to be there. but am definately interested I can't on the 12th of nov but might could another date.

I'd be interested if the weekend works out. I'll be in Seaside FL from the 28th of Nov until the 2d of December. I could detour on the way home. It will cost me BIG TIME since my sig other will be riding with me. She does not dive. Other than that, the weekends around Thanksgiving are bad. After the 2d of December,
I'll be back in Huntsville.

Many have two days for the Thanksgiving holiday with nothing to do on the following Friday - Saturday. Driving down on the Friday and returning Saturday would be open for me. That's all for November, though. December is pretty good for me also, except for the 3rd, since Mike_s has already brought that to light. I, too, will probably attend that event.

What's involved in a trip like this? I guess there is lodging near the springs? I think soemone said there are diving facilities at one of the springs, I don't know though. It looks pretty primitive from some of superbugman's pics, if a non-diver goes, are they stuck in a motel with nothing to do?

Randy,

As for diving facilities, Vortex does have an onsite dive shop,
air fills, rentals ,etc. You can get most items you
would see at any average dive shop. Morrison or the
other springs (in that area) don't have any dive shop facilities.
But they are also no-fee areas also. Morrison is run by
the county, so it's set up like a county park.

Vortex has rooms that you can rent and a bunk house.
The rooms vary in price as to the room and location, but what
you get is a bare mattress, so it's defined as "camping"
as they don't want to provide linens, sheets, pillows, blankets
or towels. (might want to bring some Toliet paper just in case. heh)

See http://www.vortexspring.com/classic/rooms.htm
for information about the "lodging" at Vortex. I've never
been in any of the rooms, but from what I've heard, they
are nothing to brag about. The selling point about it
is that you are located right at the spring. In my opinion
though it is a hassle to have to take linens/pillow/blankets.
but a sleeping bag could cover that also.

Vortex Spring is located just north of Ponce de Leon Florida.
Morrison Spring is located just below it.

There aren't many hotels directly in that area. I think that
there is one at the Interstate exit, but it didn't look like
one that most self respecting cockroaches would even stay
at.

While not on the fancy side, about 10 minutes west on I-10
is a Best Western and a Super 8. Still nothing fancy by
any means. In Crestview they have a bigger selection of
hotels, but it's about 40 miles from the springs I think.
For the "real selection" of accomadations, head south
to the beach areas, but they get $$$ also.

It looks pretty primitive from some of superbugman's pics,
if a non-diver goes, are they stuck in a motel with nothing to do?

For the most part there isn't much to do unless they want to swim
in the spring or sit back and read a book. About 1 hr south is Destin
which has a decent amount of shopping, better accomadations,
and higher end restaurants. The Silver Sands outlet malls and
Destin Commons are too of the bigger shopping complex's.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, De Funiak Springs has a handfull of hotels that seem to be nice. Crestview has about anything you would want(but 40 miles west).

If you guys figure out a weekend that works out during my schedule, you'll see me camping in a tent :)
