A friend is looking at a mk20 paired with 2 s600s. Based on the pic of the mk20, it looks like it was not rinsed very well after it was put up 2 years ago. In the picture it looks like lots of blueish/greenish build up on the mk20. With a good cleaning and rebuild do you think it will be useable again, or based on how bad it looks do you think it is too far gone?

If you can, getting a picture of the inlet filter under the yoke will give you a good idea of more potential damage than these external pictures can.

Ok i will see if i can get pics, anything in particular to look for?

Any way to hook it up to a tank to breathe it and check for IP creep? If you are going to own your own regs, an IP gauge is worth having...and they are cheap.

I'd think your local dive shop would check it for free...or at least not much.

The s600's are worth something even if the reg is trashed. How much are they wanting for the set?

Good luck,
Jay

He is asking $100, but is willing to negotiate

It's worth it IMO. ~ $150 for an overhaul and you have a solid high performance reg at a bargain price.

$100 for two s600’s is a great deal, these are likely the first generation but can be updated easily and cheaply. If the mk20 is good on the inside it’s good too.

I rebuilt a MK20 that looked way worse than that one, installed a new composite piston and it has worked great for years. It's worth the risk for that price. A new piston is probably $75 these days and that would be added to the cost of the rebuild. The composite piston locks up better than the earlier ones anyways so it might be worth it to just replace it regardless.
