Ok,

Ive done some research and looked at my bank account. With the $$ I have, the 2 regs that I can afford are the ScubaPro MK16/R190 OR the Apeks TX40 + 1st stage it comes with normally. Im doing a lot of North Ontario Lake diving, and they both seem to have good cold water ratings.

Any recomendations on which unit to order?

I am a Scubapro user and fan but do not recommend that combinationas a primary. Mk16 is an excellent choice for your area but maybe an R380 second better a G250. You may find that there is not that much of a difference in price for the R380. As far as the Apek I have no first hand experience and defer to those that do. I have an MK20/ G250 and this combo is used for all season use in the lakes and rivers in upstste NY.

The MK16 is a really good diaphram 1st stage, and the R190 performs well and is reliable. The MK20, MK25 now actually, is also a good 1st stage but is a piston. Some people don't like piston regs because they feel that they are more vulnerable to freeze ups and corrosion. I personally use a MK20/MK25, and haven't had any problems with corrosion or freeze ups.

The only real difference between a R190 and an R380 is the size of the housing. I actually prefer the way the R190 is made in that it is easier to take apart and put back together. You would not be able to tell a difference in breathing effort between the two. I have a R190 that I use as a backup, and like it a lot. If you can afford it, a G250 would perform better than a R190. If the type of diving you do warrents a high performance reg, then go with the G250. I also have an older G250, and think that it is an outstanding reg.

I don't know how the Apex line would compare to ScubaPro but, I do know that ScubaPro makes awesome regs. Next month's Roadales is supposed to test around 70 regs so, I'm sure ScubaPro and Apex will both be mentioned. Parts for ScubaPro would also be easier to get.
