stupid question im sure. but say i have a Sherwood Brute and would like a differant second stage. would there be any drawback to using mixed brands?

Not a stupid question. You do need to make sure the IP (intermediate pressure) is compatible and make sure it's tuned properly, but most can be made to play together. One potential drawback is service though, if you don't have a place that services both brands that can be a problem.

It is general practice that the primary is the farrari and the secondary is the vw. this is done by tuning or using different brands. the vw is for emerg backup and the primary is the farrari that is a great breather. the secondary is detuned farrari or vw to prevent freeflow ect.

Actually thinking now is that the primary and octo or back up should be equal in performance. I don't want to donate a crappy reg to a stressed diver or have to go on a crappy one while managing a stressed diver. And with high performance seconds just over $100.00 each why would anyone want to go cheap?

All mine are mix and match... from different decades, even. No big deal as long as they're tuned properly. As for having a "lower quality" or "detuned" octo, I agree with Jim. I donate my primary in OOA situations, so there's no way in hell I'm carrying a lower quality octo.

Habit and a pile of seconds in a box?

I have mis-matched seconds on some reg sets but have not "de-tuned" any, however most are older and some consider them less than optimal, but I like them.

I'll let you know when I finally decide to try a Hog second.
