What would be the minimal amount of weight one would want in weight belt to gain positive buyancy when ditched.

I am looking at adding plates to my BP but I am worried they will take too much off my weight belt as I will have only have like 5-8 lbs in my belt.

I can switch to smaller weight plate and make my belt weigh 8-10lbs. I am diving drysuit, SSBP, Nor Cal.

any thoughts...

Many of us have no ditchable weight at all due to the whole balanced rig thing. Do a search on it and that may help.

If you are diving with a Drysuit and a wing you have redundant buoyancy available.

What senario do you see that requires you to ditch weight?

Worst case scenario;
Ruptured bladder, no gas can go into the drysuit and youre overweighted..

Ok, lots of things need to go wrong, but it could theoretically happen..

How many failures are you going to plan for?

if things are that bad, it just ain't your day! breathe your gas down until your tanks swing & swim for it.

can you swim your rig as is?

"Failure is always an option"
Theres always this guy called Murphy whos standing behind you, ready to push you over the cliff..
And yeah.. Id rather plan for one failure that wont happen that not planning for one i found to be "unlikely" and yet happened..

The OP stated he would have 5-8 lbs to ditch. Being grossly overweighted is avoidable.

You are heaviest at the start of the dive, i.e. with full cylinders.

Being seriously negative with no gas supply and failed wing requires a combination of poor configuration, and two major failures.

At this point I'd signal the team that I'm having a problem and have them help with buoyancy or use smb to provide lift.

We usualy don't plan for multple failure. There has to be some asumed risk or you spend a lot of time sitting on the boat.

Interesting signature you have..
"If somethings wort doing, its wort doing it right"
Not planning for worst case scenarios, from my point of view, is NOT doing it right, its doing it half assed..
You think the army train for running over and capturing POWs or you think they train for running over and taking a bunch of psychos?
