Hi All,

Anyone ever experimented with using military magazine pouches for weight pockets on a BP&W?

Thanks

Brian :D

bad idea.

Maybe if you turned them upside down so you could use the quick clips for a dump... but there are better systems out there.

Maybe if you were diving a 'Ranger'////

If you don't mind OD Green or camo, they should work fine. I think I've seen black in the Surplus Store. The only problems that I see is that the "Alice Clip" is made of a cheap alloy will rust and they are usually made of a cotton/poly blend.

I've have several that I have used for years in the miltary and even though they are kept in dry storage after exercies they still have rust on them. I'll have to pull some out and see if they can be modified...

If You choose to use them..which..You could, they will work. Personally I would never do it..but then I live in that stuff. Go to Tactical Tailor they sell an item called the malice clip..it is a nylon composite that will not rust and will allow You to attach and detach the pouches for the desired effect...

Back in the '40s & '50s it was common practice to use the ammo belts for weight belts.
When they started making weight belts for the shallow water rigs, they looked just like the ammo belts, but were the off-white canvas color.

That was my first thought when I read the initial post. I still have a Garand cartridge belt lying around here somewhere. It works great for carrying shotgun shells while upland bird hunting.

The ammo belt as a weight belt idea in both the Garand and generic web belt and threaded or screwed on weight varieties was not so hot as the quick release was not actually so quick to release under water.

I see the idea of using more modern nylon ammo pouches as falling into the same category. With a little modification they could be made to work, but why? Weight pouches from Dive Rite are relatively cheap, won't slide forward on the belt like an ammo pouch would and have a well designed velcro quick release.

Inverting the pouch is a possible option to facilitate a quick release of the weights but it then places all the strain on a nylon buckle that is likely to release all your weights on your first giant stride or worse, under water just before your first deco stop. The whole idea seems to kind of go against the grain of what a diver should be trying to achieve by going to a BP/Wing in the first place.
