Hi Everyone,
I'm finally gearing up to do some Michigan diving and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for shore dives. I'd like something interesting but fairly shallow (20-50ft depth range) to test out some new gear configurations. Also, since I've been driving a desk all winter...close to shore?

You know, while we're at it...warm water, reef fish, and colorful coral would be nice too...

In all seriousness, though, thanks for any suggestions.

If your looking for Great Lake shore diving, I don't know of too many areas that have that setup. Over on the east side of the state, we do a lot of shore diving in the St. Clair river. But that is pretty high current and lots of boat traffic. So prolly not a good place to try out new gear or to work on skills. You may want to find a local inland lake. Those seem to be the best for shore diving and checking equipment and skills out.

Since you are in Ann Arbor, you may want to stop into Divers Incorporated. Rich is very knowledgeable and should be able to direct you into something that is local and fits your needs.

Not exactly Michigan. But there are 3 Quarries in Ohio not far from the Michigan border. That is great for refreshing skills, and gear tryout.. Gilboa, Portage, Whitestar. Higgins lake way up north in Michigan has shore diving. but it is a LOOOOOONG walk to get in deep water. I think spring mill pond would be the closest to Ann Arbor. there is a club that goes out there a couple times a week I believe. Diver_paula might know. She used to be with that group..

I am also currenty unemployed so I will have lots of time to go diving this summer.

You can make a shore entry off Presque Isle Park in Marquette. Basalt bottom and decent rock formations. Years ago we used this as a training site for the UNM PADI Instructor Training program. Probably wouldn't travel just for this site, but it is an OK shore dive -- and there is great wreck diving in Munising Harbor just a few miles east.

From A2, I would second gtxl's recommendations, and try one of Ohio's nearby quarries. Easy in/out, usually some stuff to see, other divers to help you out, if needed...

I'm still a member of my local club but do know of a couple LDS' that go on weekly inland lake dives. Aquatic Adventures Aquatic Adventures of Michigan, Brighton Michigan, Scuba, Scuba classes, Scuba lessons, Scuba Equipment, Diving lessons, Dive Lessons and Travel at Aquatic Adventures of MI, Brighton, MI does a weekly Weds dive at various locations. I don't think they start until May however. Sea The World Sea The World Scuba Center also does a weekly dive... can't remember if it's on Tues or Weds but it's almost always at Spring Mill Pond.
