Hello kawboy.

There are several wrecks in Lake Michigan in the 'mid-depth' range. A couple locations are off Milwaukee, WI and Charlevoix, MI. However, don't forget that being in Michigan you are centrally located to a fantastic choice of several Great Lakes! Some of the more popular wreck diving locations with shallower than 100+ foot wrecks are: Lexington/Sanilac, MI; The Mackinaw Straits; Munising, MI; Pt. Pelee, ONT; Alpena, MI to name a few.

And quarry diving is a great way to get some bottom time when you aren't able to wreck dive. If you haven't already done so, check out the thread regarding the GLWC Meet & Greet II.

Paula

Hey, thanks for the info Paula! Where is the meet and greet located? I heard someone mention this earlier and if memory serves me right it was in Portage? Is that as in the Portage near Kalamazoo, because that is where i live. Thanks again!

kawboys579,

Portage Quarry is in Ohio, just south of Bowling Green. Here's a link to their website in case you'd like to take a look and get more info. http://www.portagequarry.com/index.html

One of the nice things about Portage is that you can enter the water from almost anywhere 3/4 the way around the perimeter. That eliminates any crowding with entering and exiting the water and just makes for a relaxing, spacious atmosphere.

Oh, that sounds pretty nice. What kind of depth is the quarry? Any special things of interest on the bottom?

Take a look at the link scubafishee gave. It has a map of the quarry, showing depths and the sunken sites. Portage has more 'stuff' than most quarries. And is non-diver friendly if someone wants to come with you.

I have dove Torch lake several times. If you dive near the sand bar you will find a lot of sun glasses. Deep water point has a nice drop off with a bunch of log piles. You will see a lot of fish. The lake has great Vis.
