Do people who say that realize that pigs eventually turn into hogs?
(difference between a pig and hog is primarily size. the idea being a hog is now fully grown and should be slaughtered for meat)

These are farm boys. We know the difference between pigs and hogs. If you don't get it, try selling to the public.

Christi, I am a small business owner and sympathetic with you but $12 for a $3 item when you already have charged for handling the air tank seems excessive.
Ever go to a restaurant? What do you think the wholesale cost was for that $100 meal you just had? :D

Fair enough. I'm in until someone I like starts including nitrox for a few dollars more. I already know of one shop on the mainland doing that. You need to understand that I'm not upset about it, I just think the business model will fail. Until then, I do like my nitrox.

With risking offending some great shops...

I too find the higher markup shop's nitrox tank upgrade cost a little unsavory. It's understandable to pay premium for better service or a better product but to have the same product (analyzed?) upsold at a 400% profit margin is a tad extravagant.

From one business owner to another respectfully.

Regards,
Cameron

ProDive, Nitrox is included if your certified.

I think you really need to look at the whole package of what a dive op is offering you for the price you are paying. There is enough competition with dive ops in Cozumel that I am sure they police overpricing themselves. Without knowledge in the industry one reason I could see for a high MU is if Nitrox extends dive times, it extends work times for DM's and captains. I am sure there is much more to it than I could imagine.

Like anything else, the price is what the market will bear. We dive Nitrox and pay the extra $100+ each for the benefit. Our op does not use Meridiano, but still charges $10 a tank. Diving is not cheap, the extra cost gets us to some more advanced dive sights, gives us longer bottom time deeper, And I think keeps us off the beginner boat. No offense to beginners, we were all there once and I'm far from Jacque Cousteau.

Obviously, the extra cost is being paid, if it wasnt, the market would self correct. Considering the overall cost of a dive vacation, it's minimal(and we go cheap). I would love to get free Nitrox as a loyalty incentive, but the truth is, we dive with our op for a very specific reason available with very few ops, but the others charge more last time I checked. We will dive with them again until the cost outweighs the perceived benefit. Truth is, we have loved all the divemasters and captains we have met with 3 dive ops over the last 3 years and would dive with any of them again if needed.

The perfect dive op (for me) would offer:
1. Big steel tanks
2. Several Small fast boats with great DM's and captains
3. Snacks, fruit, and water, maybe sodas on the boat (caffeine and sugar)
4. Surface interval on a beach (preferably with coons and cootamundis )
5. Pick up close to Casa Mexicana
6. Free Nitrox
7. Loyalty and cash discount
8. Parkas for my wife
9. Depart the dock at 8 or 8:30 maybe later.
10 barracuda and San Juan on every trip...maybe twice
11. A very cold Bohemia Obscura for the trip back
12. $80 for a 2 tank dive
13. Free airfare....free night dives, free scooter rentals, and an unlimited tab at The Thirsty Cougar and The Pub..... and a unicorn to ride on the beach....
14. Sophia Vergara, with a beer....and donuts

Is that too much to ask? All in all, I still think that dive vacations in Cozumel are a great deal, we're going to Roatan in February and it is about 30% more. I really can't complain.

Sounds perfect to me! ;) Love Roatan too, for a week of total dive circus, good times. But to just relax and dive and hang out, Coz is tough to beat for the price. And I don't much mind paying extra for the geezer gas, my Op of choice makes things pretty easy and enjoyable.
