A 55-year-old man died Sunday while diving in the Mendocino Bay.
The man was diving with a friend, when the friend noticed him face down in the water, according to Mendocino Fire Chief Dxxxx Hxxxxxxx. The friend pulled the victim out of the water and started performing CPR, while bystanders called 911, Hxxxxxxx said.
When firefighters arrived shortly before 4 p.m., the victim -- whose name has not been released -- was at the base of a short cliff, Hervilla said.
The fire department and other medical personnel continued CPR until paramedics arrived on scene. The victim was evacuated using a Stokes stretcher during a high angle cliff rescue, Hervilla said.
The patient had a pulse at this point, he said, but died in the ambulance while en route to the Mendocino Coast District Hospital.
The US Coast Guard also responded to the incident.
