FWIW, once their eyes have changed, they can't see and will usually hide until they have molted. Though he probably smelled you, he probably thought he was well hidden from you.

Certainly it hoped so. FWIW it seems that rattle snakes have been observed lately to be more of a mind to blend into the background, as rattling used to warn animals to stay away, now it attracts humans with murderous intent. The genus is starting to adapt away from rattling...the quiet snakes live and reproduce longer...
